RecordNow apparently has a 110 character filename(path name) size limit on a
data DVD-R burn. Any burn programs do better(longer path names)? Anyway
around that limit? If no then what's the best/easiest way to get a file by
file tree onto a DVD-R with convenient access etc??

Joliet has an inbuilt limit of 128 characters, which may be the same
thing you're referring to. Use software that can record in 8.3
file/folder names and saves the long path information.

Don't know if this is useful for you, and it might depend on what
platform you use, but isntead using packet writing on a DVD+RW, using
WinXP and InCD, I have seen paths using in total 180 characters and
filenames of 117 characters.
I don't know the actual limits but I know it worked where a burn with
Joliet had to change the names.

(I beleive that such long names and length of path should be avoided
because they are too long to be user friendly.)

XP and Explorer allow such long path names with no warning, so users will
do it. Then when it comes time to save it all to a tree on a DVD, it
fails. At that point it's a major gotcha with no convenient way out. What
software is the best answer to get any such tree on a DVD and then allow
easy file by file access?? Some archive or backup program???

Nero Backitup will do long paths as 8.3 and save the long name info for
use to restore the files.

Quick and easy way:
Include the files inside a ZIP or RAR archive. Burn the archive to disk
instead of the file tree. I'd suggest using no compression, so it's faster to
extract selected files.

Drawbacks: not as easy to access files

Obscure way:
Use the obsolete Romeo filesystem instead of Joliet. Since Romeo is a pretty
obscure format to find these days, you might have to search to find a program
that lets you author a disc in this format.

The last time I tried this (a couple years ago), the only software that still
supported Romeo was Adaptec EZ-CD Pro and NTI CD Maker Professional. EZ-CD
Pro was so old that it wouldn't even install, IIRC (being a 1995-era
application or so), but I was able to get NTI CD Maker Professional to work.
I authored a new CD-R disc in Romeo format, filled it up to 4.37GB (ignoring
the maximum of 700MB, of course), and wrote it to an ISO image. Then I burned
the ISO image in DVD Decrypter, and it worked fine. Disregard the fact that
you just made a DVD-sized CD image -- since it's still just an ISO9660
filesystem at heart it should work fine.

Drawbacks: supposedly you can't read Romeo discs in DOS; may violate DVD
standards; there's still a filename length limit, though it's greater than
Joliet's.

I've tried DVDs with ISO9660/Romeo on WinXP, Win98, and Linux and had no
problems reading the long filenames or accessing the files.

Hope this helps.
