You're pretty much hitting the nail on the head with your guess above,
the VIA MVP3 chipset only supports 64Mbit chips at a maximum. You're
DIMMs likely use 128Mbit chips and just aren't supported by the
chipset. Each 128MB DIMM therefore gets detected instead as a 64MB
DIMM and you end up with only half your memory.
There is no solution to this.
