It's been 7 years since I've bought my ViewSonic 17PS. What's best
now?

Best for what purpose? For graphic arts Trinitron based monitors are
preferred, for gaming CRTs give faster response than LCDs, for most
other things else LCDs are quite nice.

Just got a Samsung Syncmaster 191T (black) 19" Flat Panel. Quite a nice
monitor. I don't game, so not an issue with me. It's kind of on the bright
side at the default settings, but I just lowered brightness a bit.

The view is just great, very sharp. $749.00 less $100 mail in rebates. Had
a ViewSonic VG181 18" which I paid $2200.00 for 18 months ago... prices have
really dropped.

I have the 191T as well- great color, balance, sharpness, just about
everything. I can tell only a slight improvement w/DVI over analog, but
the bonus is that you get the dual inputs for use with a second machine.
I play low-impact games like D2 and SimCity 4, which don't stress an
LCD, so I can't really comment on the game performance past that.

I believe the Dell 1900 FP is the same screen, only in silver.

Newegg has the 191T for $660, don't know if that's before or after
rebate, though. I got mine at BB last November and got the rebate by
carving out the UPC, so I can imagine that the deal would still be good.
If it is, $560 for that monitor is a pretty incredible deal.

One thing to note about the 191T is that it has an offboard power
supply, much like a laptop. This may or may not be a big deal to some
people. I had to replace mine(got shorted out in a flood), which was
sort of a pain and cost $60.

However, considering the complaints I've seen, YMMV.

Here are some suggestions... You choose which one suits your wallet the
best...

Mitsubishi 930SB and the NEC monitor of the same specifications (in fact,
the same monitor, but other brand, NEC and Mitsubishi are manufacturing
monitors together)

EIZO T766 (expensive, but best quality)

LaCie ElectronBlue 19" (again, expensive but quality)

Iiyama Vision Master Pro 454

Hitachi CM772FET

OK, these were the expensive ones... Now some cheaper models...

Philips 109P40

Mitsubishi 93SB (not the 930SB mentioned before!!!!)

SONY E-series (E=economy)

Iiyama Vision Master Pro 455 (454 is better, don't let the numbers fool
you!)

OK, that's it... I'd recommend only this... Samsungs, LGs, AOCs, etc...
Avoid those if you like your eyes... If you want LCD's, know that when you
lower the resolution, the picture distorts, and interpolates... It's a bit
fuzzy then... Go with NEC models (1701, 1760NX), EIZO, SONY...

I have a 930SB and it's kind of blurry for text, especially near the bottom
(running 1280x1024@85Hz on an ATI Radeon 9000 Pro 64MB). I exchanged the
first one and the 2nd isn't a whole lot better. Graphics are great though.
I suppose it's par for the course for aperture grill monitors but the 17"
variety don't seem to have probs with text clarity in my experience.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Thanks to those who have responded.

I look at several monitors, including ones mentioned here and was not
satisfied with any of them. I guess I'm spoiled by the Hitachi shadow
mask CRT's, but Hitachi isn't making them anymore (even for
themselves). Samsung is now the SM CRT leader, but even they aren't
as good.

I found a 2 year old 19" monitor with a Hitachi tube on eBay. It
beats everything out today, IMO. Perfect crisp text and great
graphics. You'd think it was an LCD!

I recommend either a used Hitachi Superscan 751 or KDS VS-195e, if
anyone is interested.

Which is the best for text quality? I have a Viewsonic G220fb, I
exchanged it once and both of them had blurry text. Anyone can help?<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Hrm, that was a shadow mask monitor if I'm not mistaked; those are supposed
to have the best text quality. What video card do you have? The Radeon I
have is supposed to have good 2D quality...<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Yes it is a Shadow Mask. My video card is an Asus V8420 Ti-4200 128Mo.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
