Post subject: Looking for a 21 inch crt monitor
Archived from groups: comp>sys>ibm>pc>hardware>video (more info?)

My crt monitor died a few days ago.

I am looking to replace it with a 21 inch crt monitor.

I was originally trying to find a monitor with 2 inputs (2-VGA or VGA &
BNC), but I am giving up the search.

I have looked at a few 21 inch monitors at various stores (Sony E540, NEC
FE2111, Viewsonic P220F) but the text does not seem really sharp. Since the
monitor was in the video-wall display, the input signal quality was not that
good (could not really tell the resolution either, prolly 1024x768)

I will be using the monitor resolutions in 1280x1024 or 1400x1050 (possibly
1600x1200 in large font)

Anyone happy/not happy with the text quality with these monitors?

Is it worth spending a bit more to get one of Sony G540, NEC/Mitsubishi 2141
(or 2070) or Viewsonic P225f. Too bad I won't be able to actually look at
these crts.

Any other crts I should consider (within a reasonable price range of
$500-600)

Thanks,

yuki

And I'll add, for displaying detail at 21", a quality ($$$) monitor is
required ... I too like my Hitachi. My opinion, refresh rate capability
counts to prevent eyestrain ... for browsing, my desktop is set at
1024x768x120hz ... lower priced monitors don't do that.

yuki,
my two cents..I just purchased an IBM P260 refurb..and it is
beautiful! DVI and VGA connectors, though can't seem to get the DVI
to work with my new G5 yet(!). Resolution options are as limitless as
they come, mine is set to 1280x1024 for everyday apps at 100Hz!
You're correct the high refresh is very easy on the eyes...
I saw some on Ebay and/or Overstock.com a few weeks ago, there are
definitely some out there (in the $200-$400 range!). The one drawback
to the trinitron tube is the two very thin aperture grille wires which
are only visible with a very light background or image. I am an
amateur photographer, and it doesn't affect any of my work at all now
that I'm used to it...good luck!

My dead HP monitor was used (already died once, power supply fixed for
$250).

I rather get a new unit with a full 3-year warranty (I know it is a hit &
miss).

My be I will just get a 19 inch, just forgettaboutit.

The aperture grille lines are not a problem for me.
I use 19 inch Trinitron monitors at work now.
The lines don't bother me even with the black text on white background.

I am starting to think I should just go back to an 19 inch monitor.

Go down to Kinko's and look at their big 21" sony E540P (or whatever
it is Wink on their rental machines. go in when someone's doing their
graphics work, and look over their shoulder. That sony is pretty good
quality if you can find a good deal on them. Apparently there was a
great rebate for awhile Sad<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I also have one that I bought on Ebay for $180... The guy was quite diassapointed
with the price, but gave it to me. Mine came from <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.surfplus.net" target="_blank">www.surfplus.net</a> which is a short
drive away - I just went to the store and picked it up.

Yuki:

IMO and in general, if text sharpness is paramount and colour
performance secondary, shadow mask (sm) CRTs are what you should be
scouting.
If colour performance is most important, and txt sharpness less
so, look to aperture grille (ag) CRTs.
The monitors you mention above are the ag type and you seem to be
looking for good text.
I had been happy with ViewSonic sms but they seem to be phasing
out their better sm monitors and moving to just ag CRTs and LCDs.
The Hitachi CM810 21" sm mentioned by Tod above is likely a very
good choice. I think that ViewSonic had been using Hitachi CRTs in
their sm Pro displays.
The only other sm monitors that I've heard to be good are those
from EIZO (probably the best out there but very expensive) and
Cornerstone (model P1500). Both have dual VGA (D-sub/BNC) inputs.

<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.eizo.com/index.htm" target="_blank">http://www.eizo.com/index.htm</a>
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.bigmonitors.com/products/monitors/index.htm" target="_blank">http://www.bigmonitors.com/products/monitors/index.htm</a>

Or, you may want to consider changing to an LCD ...

Here is a copy of a post I just made elsewhere:

From what my 56 year old eyes have seen with the gear I have used:

LCD TFT sharpest text yet and excellent colour performance.
Shadow Mask CRTs: excellent text sharpness and good colour
performance.
Aperture Grille CRTs: excellent color performance and good text
sharpness.

Current gear:
ATI Radeon 9800XT
PrimaryDVI: 21.3" Samsung SyncMaster 213T TFT
Secondary VGA: 22" ViewSonic P225f Aperture Grille

Previous to that:
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro
Primary VGA: 21" ViewSonic P817 Shadow Mask
Secondary VGA: 22" ViewSonic P225f Aperture Grille

Previous to that:
Matrox Parhelia 512
Primary VGA: 21" ViewSonic P817 Shadow Mask
Secondary VGA: 22" ViewSonic P225f Aperture Grille

Previous to that:
Matrox G400max:
Primary VGA: 21" ViewSonic P817 Shadow Mask
Secondary VGA: 17" ViewSonic 17PS-2 Shadow Mask.

I always use/used 1600x1200 32bit 85Hz small fonts but for the TFT
which is 1600x1200 60Hz (native) and the 17PS-2 was used at 1152x864
85Hz 32bit small fonts.
This is decent quality stuff and much of it used side-by-side.
I haven't seen anything different from looking at other monitors in
action that would change my opinions.

Happy trails,<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I own two 21's, a Cornerstone 1600 and a Cornerstone 1500. The 1600 takes
two vga inputs, but I am too lazy to crawl behind the 1500 to check how many
inputs. These are fine monitors, and can probably be had on the cheap
nowadays. At the time I bought these monitors, their top model was the 1700,
which might also be available inexpensively now.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
