I was handed a 370DLE system to fix. The only thing I have found so far is
that it has 2 PC100 64MB modules installed. The board and their website says
"PC133 Registered ECC Required".

Can anyone tell me what problems this el cheapo memory could cause, if any?

Thanks

If the memory isn't ECC god knows what problems you could have. You might
see OS stability problems (i.e. Memory read errors), random reboots....maybe
even slow performance. Memory problems cause so many diverse errors that
its hard to write them down.

also this board supports 133/100mhz FSB cpu's and RAM. I'd say its best to
make sure the RAM & CPU mhz are in sync.
i.e. an intel p3 933 (133fsb) should be paired with PC133 ECC ram. while a
p3 800 (100fsb) should be paired with PC100 ECC ram.
And of course you need pairs due to memory interleaving....

I'm sure you already know most of that though.

The Supermicro 370DLE does not require pairs.
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.supermicro.com/PRODUCT/MotherBoards/RCC_LE/370dle.htm" target="_blank">http://www.supermicro.com/PRODUCT/MotherBoards/RCC_LE/370dle.htm</a>
In addition, I've seen "el cheapo" memory, especially in the instance
that it's the incorrect type, cause innumerable errors. Two things that
people tend to skimp on most, in my experience, are RAM and Power
supply. These items are just as important as motherboard and CPU, yet
people will buy the cheapest thing they can put their hands on. I'm
especially suprised to see this for servers. That said, pick up a good,
name brand memory, ECC Registered, with the same bus speed as your CPU.
PC133 should work no matter what you have, as it should clock down to
the appropriate speed. However, it's always better safe than sorry.

I think you are mistaken. It doesn't need pairs. Also, lack of ECC isn't
the horror story you make out. A 100MHz bus CPU doesn't have to be paired
with PC100 RAM, PC133 will work fine.

This is directly from Supermicro's website:

Four 3.3 volt, 168-pin registered DIMM sockets (PC100 or PC133)
Up to 4 GB ECC registered SDRAM memory
Supports only registered ECC memory. Non-ECC or unbuffered SDRAM are not
supported.

You're correct on the PC133 vs. PC100 thing, except that some
inexpensive PC133 memory doesn't want to clock down to PC100, for
whatever reason.
And, the lack of ECC IS the horror story he makes out. That board won't
even boot without ECC Registered memory.

Lastly, take it easy. And, FYI, it looks especially bad when you
criticize others right after you present bad data. Even if the board
didn't require Registered memory, he's right on in his description of
what happens when you use non-Registered non-ECC memory on SOME dual
processor boards. While his information is slightly technically
innaccurate in regard to the PC100/PC133 thing, it's really not a bad
idea, especially in light of the problems I've been seeing with some
PC133 memory not clocking properly lately... The pairs thing is just
wrong, that's the 370DE6, not DLE.
