I built a system a few monthes ago.

Decided that I *needed* a internal burner. Bought a Lite-On
48x24x48x16 Combo Drive, Model LTC48161H BK from NewEgg.com. Tried
it out @ work on a P4 machine. No problems. Smoking fast ripping and
burning. Installed on the little cube and it can only burn @ 24x
speed, though by actual time, it's barely 10x. But the Yamaha still
burns @ 24x! I ran Nero's drive utility to test the Lite-On and it
says it's only capable of 24x, since *THE SOURCE IS TOO SLOW*. But if
that's the case, why does the Yamaha USB burn @ 24x???

From reading other types of posts on the 41G2, I'm thinking of trying
a different IDE cable for the DVD drive.

I'm ordering (the next thing on the computer-to-do-list) another stick
of RAM (same kind). But I don't see how this'll help. Also, some
time in the next month I'll upgrade the CPU and maybe the fan
(although I don't mind the sound that much, so maybe not).

Any advice? Things to try? Check? Please? It's not that much of a
loss, but I thought the Yamaha would be a back up burner, not the
other way around! If I can't figure it out, I'm thinking of an
external USB2/Firewire case for the new burner and putting a removable
HDD cage in it's place. But, I'd really like to know what's up.

Thank you,
Tim

To be honest haven't a clue - but - could maybe be low power supply?
Just a thought..

You don't say which burners are on which IDE channels. The burner
needs to be the secondary master and the source files need to be on a
hard drive on the primary channel. My DVD burner is the secondary
master. If I burn from a HD that's a secondary slave, it slows way
down to avoid buffer underruns. Otherwise, the IDE channel has to
handle information going in both directions and it has to pause in
between. If that's not it, color me bumfuzzled.

Thanks for the suggestion. I haven't been able to play with the
little cube since I posted the question. I did briefly boot it up
today to transfer some files to it (it's both my back up and the
Photoshop machine). I *think* I noticed the BIOS telling me that
there is no cable plugged into the 2ndary IDE channel[after the memory
count--which means I only used one cable?-That would explain it], but
*in* the BIOS setup[hitting <del> during the count], it indicates that
I used the two different channels and the hdd is master on 1 and the
burner/dvd rom is master on 2. This weekend I'll be able to open it
up and look for sure(now I'm even more puzzled). Too bad the shielded
round cables haven't arrived yet. Will post the eventually solution.
Hope I don't do it with egg on my face!

Tim

Well the "saga" ends.
I replaced the stock IDE cables with new round and shielded ones. And
installed the Shuttle multicard reader @ the same time.

Seems to have been it. NERO's utilities claim that the drive can burn
@ 40X. And all the other tests are fast. I burned a couple of
different CDs (data, audio) and they were <3minutes. I'm happy.

Oh and the message that I couldn't read. Says that there is no 80
conductor cable installed on the 2nd IDE channel. Not sure why it
says that since, it very obviously does. But hey. Everything seems
to work. Before I mess with it anymore, I'm going to use Ghost to
make a backup. Which means I have to learn how to use it first!

Thanks to everyong for all the suggestions.
