Intel is predicting that it will be at 4Ghz by the end of 2004, with the
introduction of the 90nm Prescott processor. Of course there's word that the
initial versions of Prescott are already using well over 100W of energy,
near the 3Ghz mark, one can only imagine how much a 4Ghz will take. There
had better be some quantum improvements of process technology before it
reaches 4Ghz.

Yeah, but think how much you'll save on heating. Not so good if you're
somewhere hot, I guess!

well over? What's well over? I've heard that it "approaches" 100W and an
older report (from some Tawainese company) said it ran around 102W but
haven't heard the "well over" line yet and I thought the "approaches 100W"
thing was on a 3.4 MHz part but I could be wrong.

PIV will be at 3.4 GHz likely before year's end. Why is 4 GHz a stretch?
My feeling is that the delays have a lot to do with it's thermal output. No
doubt they are working hard to improve that so the 4 GHz barrier can be
achieved.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Forget Thermaltake and PCPowerandCooling, here is the CPU fan of the

Better suggestion:

Just be sure to have everything bolted in place.

It'll probably hold by year end. I don't find it too impressive that
Intel have been stuck at little more than 3 GHz for almost a year now.

By the ways things are going, enthusiast users who choose Intel chips
in the not-too-distant future will be forced to run their
mainboard/CPU setup in a refrigerated casing or local meat locker to
get adequate cooling for overclocking Smile

At least AMD's got their 64-bit Athlon 64/FX chips out now!<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

On a more serious note, it looks like Intel is going to be
relying on the adoption of the BTX motherboard. This will
place the processor on the lower front corner of the
motherboard (when in a tower/midtower case) and provide for
a ducted airflow over the cpu. Instead of drawing warm air
from inside the case and blowing it over the CPU's heatsink,
cooler air will be drawn from outside the case, through a
duct, and then over the heatsink.

Supposedly this will allow even the next year's worth of P4s
to be cooled with fans that are slower and quieter than the
turbines that something like a 3 GHz P4 currently needs.

Unfortunately the air warmed up by the processor does not
appear to get ducted out of the case - in the one and only
picture I've seen so far the other end of the duct seems to
exhaust just past the cpu and hence has to be dealt with by
ordinary case fans.
