I have an opportunity to get a new Matrox P650 for only a couple $ more than
the price of a 550. It will be going into an AGP 4X system (Asus P4B533)
...... Would there be any benefit at all to going for the 650 in this AGP 4X
system (recognizing that the 650 is 8X capable), or should I save the extra
$ and just go with the 550? Generally intended to just be a 2D
text/business graphics/photo editing box; no games or 3d interest at all.
Just looking for very high quality, rock-stable image in 2D space (what I'm
used to in older systems using earlier Matrox boards).
Thanks in advance for any recommendations. >> Stay informed about: Matrox 550 vs P650 |

From what I've seen and reports I've heard, the only logical reason for going
with the P650 for 2D only would be for use with two monitors requiring digital
connections. Of course, there is also the likelihood that Matrox will
discontinue the 550 before the 650 and will support the 650 longer. But seeing
how long they've always supported discontinued cards, I doubt that would ever be
a real problem.

IMHO if there is only a couple of dollars in the price go for the 650. The
odds are that drivers will continue to be developed for longer than the
550. A better buy for that reason alone.
I like both my G400MAX and my G550 and my P650. All are ultra reliable and
give me good image quality which is all I want.
Hope this helps

This place has the G550 (DVI only) for $60+shipping
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.softwareandstuff.com/h_crd_matroxG550.html" target="_blank">http://www.softwareandstuff.com/h_crd_matroxG550.html</a>
Some good prices ($40-$45) also on <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.ebay.com" target="_blank">www.ebay.com</a>
$120 is a good price for a P650
I found my ATI 9600 PRO AIW to have good 2D
(I use to use a Matrox G400 and a Voodoo5)
ATI 9600SEs start around $75
