Having read this months PCF and it has an article on how to upgrade the
fx5900 to a 5950 via a BIOS upgrade. This works on standard 5900's but
would it work on 5900XT's although the prices are very similar so would I be
better buying the older standard card or the newer slower card and upgrading
it instead.

No , you donīt wanna flash the XT with an 5950 bios, because:
a) you never hear of somebody, stating "my XT/5950 bios flash worked out".
b) test ( google search a bit) indicated, that the 5900 with an 5950 bios
actually might be slower as measured before the flash.
c) there is no guarantee of a working re-flash if 5900/5950 flash wonīt
succeed.
d) your dealers guarantee will be flashed as well Wink
