I saw some really bad reviews on Minolta's Z1 - supposely it's total useless
in night scenes. I like my Canon S1 IS. Good movie, no out of syncs.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: 640x480 30FPS Movie Mode Camera?? |

Careful of battery life. I believe that is the one that has a hard time with
more than a half an hour.

Here we disagree. NiMH are cheap, high capacity, fast chargeable(even less
than 1 hour). And if you're out, you can still buy alkalines and put them
in( they last pretty good if flash is not used). When you LiIon is empty,
all you can do is put it into charger and wait...
They sell 2300 mAh NiMH now. And they last more than 500 shots in decent
cameras (liek my Canon S1 IS).

The camera technology has definitely improved for battery life but a friend
of mine just purchased a Minolta 6mp? aprox $1500 and it's batteries last
almost an hour.
I can't afford to buy or charge that many batterries for a camera. If you
gave me one it would be at home when I am out with my 20 hour battery.
The number of pictures does not relate to battery life. If you want to count
it that way my Pentax will probably do about 2000-3000 for one charge.
Cameras are not used that way for most. They are used for a few pics here
and a few there.
Oh yeah the internal flash reaches 17 feet. try that with most. Most small
digital cameras flashes reach about 5-6 feet.
The LioN battery is not always the answer. I hear reports the Sony
miniatures only last about an hour per charge.

If you're a service man, you know that all that broken doors are not coming
from crap batteries, but from wrong handling. I've had many different
devices with such doors and i never had one break in all these years.
It's like if you'd say that all tyres we use for cars are crap since they
suffer from holes, made with nails, screws etc, so stay away from them...
Don't blaim batteries for mistakes, caused by men.. I don't prefer AA cells
as such, it's just all LiIon's are made for specific camera and as such
bloddy expensive, so if you wanna extra pack, you pay twice or more as much
as for AA pack. And you need recharge one or other.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: 640x480 30FPS Movie Mode Camera?? |

WHAT--Canon? Nope, mate. My Canon lasts over 5 hours of play (with LCD on,
sure) with one pack of NiMH 2300 mAh. YOu must confused models...

With 500 shots i meant mixed mode with some shooting, some waiting and some
reviewing made photos. I know that noone will make 500 shots one after
another. It'a just my old Olympus C300 made just over 100 shots while Canon
makes over 500 shots.
20 hours is a lot for any camera or pack. I doubt there's any pack that will
last that long. If you're away from power, you should consider car powered
charger.

Thread warning! I was refering to the Minolta Dimage something that my
ex-boss just bought.
I have heard good things about the mini-Canons. I have one of their old
camcorders and it was junk but probably a different manufacturer behind the
name.

HI,
I know this is dated, but I too bought (in late-November 2004) a Canon
S1 IS D/C for the "movie mode" (640x480 30 FPS).
I see the Hitachi 4B+GB microdrive sells for $139.99 with rebates
expiring 12/11/04.
I haven't used this camera at all--but my manual at p. 53 says the limit
is 1GB or about 1 hr recording time. The impression (not having tested
it) is that a large CF card will not be recognized by the system. Is
that correct? Hitachi's website states the Hitachi 3K4 4GB microdrive
is "compatible" with the Canon S1 IS.
Has any one actually used a 4GB microdrive in the Canon S1 IS?
Any info appreciated.

That's missunderstanding...
The manual says that you can't make a file, larger than 1G, and NOT that you
can't HAVE CF card (or drive) larger than 1G. You can have (tested by many
reviewers) 8G drive and make 8 movie clips, each 1G long. BUT you can't make
ONE movie clip which filesize is longer than 1G. That's camera's file system
limit. How long you shoot depends on quality settings and by the camera,
which can't shoot longer than 1 hour. Then you can stop and start again.
BTW i've read in some other thread's link that Hitachi drives are not all
compatible with this camera, so you better check it out.

I've been looking around for awhile and although i am also looking for a full dv camera I'm an extreme bargain hunter. I have come across an Aiptek IS-DV camera that does 3mp stills, plays mp3 , records voice, is a webcam and records vhs quality MPEG-4 videos 29.5 fps at 640x480. Check this camera out on Aiptek.com web site I got it there at a special price of 149.00 with an additinal battery and accesories. Let me know your opimion on this camera. >> Stay informed about: 640x480 30FPS Movie Mode Camera?? |
