I've just seen my second retail 6600 AGP card with a thrown fan blade.
Actually, of course, it's half the molded rotor, which makes a lovely noise
and a suprising amount of shake.

Common problem? Bad run? This does not seem to be one of the more extreme
squirrelcage fans on the market.

(ATItech agreed to replace the card, of course.)

I believe the fan on the card varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. I
used to have a 6600 GT and it lasted a year before going kaput, but in my
case, it was the power connector that died, the fan was fine.

Take a close look at the retail packaging. Does it have a nice vulnerable
clear window in the front, or have the box contents arranged in such a way,
that the fan is liable to be dented?
