Some are speculating that the prices of older FX models (particularly
the 5900) are going to drop after the new 6800 will be released.

My question: when will the drop happen in conjuction to the release of
the 6800, and will it be very significant?

I'm thinking of getting a 5900XT this week but will hold off if I find
out the price of it (around $170) will drop insanely once this new chip
comes out.

The 5900XT is about to quietly be DISCONTINUED from production. It's
stealing too many sales from the slower 5700. If you want a 5900XT, buy it
NOW.

I'm bvilding a "lowend" Athlon1800 system (have a bvggy 750 for the last
