Are these BFG 6800GT benchmarks normal on a P4.28c with 512MB RAM?

3DM03 - ~10800
Aquamark3 - ~53000

My worries lie with the latter. I've seen scores much higher than that
on similar systems.

Seriously, why do you care? Can you play the games you want to? A lot of
people spend there live OC'ing everythig just to get higher scores, get over
it and spend your time using your PC for what you built it.

Guess you've never run a 3d app and gotten borderline performance.

Nothing wrong with those numbers. Yes you do see higher numbers, but that's
often with overclocked GT's or with particular drivers than bench well
rather than necessarily play well. And you can also spend time fiddling
about disabling various windows processes and increasing process priorities
and all sorts of other messing to try to boost the numbers.

If you simply install the card and run the tests and get the numbers above,
you system would seem to be working just fine.

Pete has a good point; that benchmarks are not necessarily real-world.
Another part of his point could be that spending time measuring what you can
do instead of spending time DOING what you do can be counterproductive.
What Pete may be discounting is:
(a) Some people derive pleasure from benchmarking for various and
valid-to-them reasons. Is it for anyone else to judge whether their reasons
are valid or not?
(b) If there was no value in benchmarking then it would not exist.
(c) Archagon (the original poster) may have a problem with some part of his
system that he honestly wants to diagnose. Benchmarks can be useful for this
because you can look at scores obtained by systems with similar/identical
equipment and get an idea as to whether your system is optimally tuned. Fact
is with so many settings to deal with, beginning with BIOS, you could have
two systems with identical hardware performing vastly different. And if you,
like me, use your computer to make money, it becomes even more important
that you eek out every bit of performance you can from your computer. For
example, if you are doing 3D renders it can make a big different in the
bottom line for your machine to render an image or animation in one hour vs.
three. And hey what if all he wants to do is play games with his system and
he wants his framerate to be as great as it can be?
I don't think Ed missed your point, Pete. I think you missed his.

I think half the fun of getting a new video card is benchmarking and see how
it compares with other people's systems and scores. The guys are right,
however it does not make much difference and the important thing is has it
improved your gaming experience.

Here are my scores with an eVGA 6800 GT:

2800 Barton w/1 Gig of ram, no ocing, 61.77 drv.

3DMark03: 10,160

AquaMark3: 50,815

AMD 64 3400 w/1 Gig of ram, lite oc cpu/mem and 66.81 drv:

3DMark03: 11,271

AquaMark3: 62,312

Nothing to brag about here, but you are doing better than my Barton.

Sorry forgot to mention my card is clocked at 420/1.13. This is what the
overclock tab said was optimal.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Wow you are clockin that GT fast.
Is 640x480 the default test for 3DMark03? I thought 1024x768 was?
Did you do anything to the default AA/AF settings in 3DMark03?
And why the heck are some people still using 3DMark03 when 3DMark05 is the
way to challenge the 6800 series of cards?
I know it feels good to have a bigger... number... but for one thing I got
tired of looking at the same animations of the damned troll-killer and such.
But more importantly, I wanted to try my card against the heaviest/hardest
rendering jobs utilizing the latest DirectX version possible so I could be
sure to not be near any kind of ceiling. But no I don't know that my FX-51 /
6800 GTOC setup would hit any kind of ceiling with 3DMark03 although I
remember getting some scores in/near the 9000 range with my 5950 Ultra card
in this same FX-51 system so yeah I felt it necessary to jump up to the next
benchmark level. Maybe I should have kept 03 installed just to see...
Please don't take this as criticism. I'm just talking here and totally open
to hearing other opinions and learning from you all Smile

Yes 1024x768 is the default for 3dmark03 with no AA and optimal filtering
I think. I am going to try with 3dmark05 as well I just havent got to it
yet. I had a bunch of benches from 3dmark03 and wanted to see how they
compared so I ran them. No offense taken though. My default 3dmark03
with my 9700 Pro was 4900 so 11300 feels pretty good to me now!<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

He has a valid question. He is asking because he thinks he might have a
problem with his config which may be limiting his performance. Haven't you
ever heard of baselining? Also, if I had just plunked down 4 hun for a
video card I would be expecting it to perform at it's optimum.

Sure, they RUN fine, but I bought this card for top of the line
performance - not satisfactory.

As Scotter and DaveL correctly assumed, I'm doing this to diagnose my
system. Some of my games - in fact, ALL of them - don't seem to be
performing well at all. With all settings at high, UT2004 runs at
~35FPS on Onslaught, Morrowind runs at ~30FPS, and Counter-Strike (!)
even dips to 50FPS on some maps and never goes above ~170FPS, no
matter how high I set the max FPS (this has nothing to do with VSync).

Certianly, it's possible that such performance is to be expected, but
I highly doubt it.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
