Post subject: Gigabyte 7N400 Pro2 Rev. 1.0 SATA problem
Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>mainboard>gigabyte (more info?)

I've searched for several days and can't seem to find anything that is
an exact match to the problem I am having. I have a Gigabyte 7N400 Pro
2 board with an F11 bios. I am running an Athlon 2200+, 512 Mb of DDR
400, 2 Western Digital 120g drives in a Raid 0 array, a GeForce 3Ti
200, a Creative Augidy Platinum Sound Card, Sony 16X DVD Dual double
layer drive, 52x CD Burner, Generic Floppy, and a Zip 250. Recently I
tried to add a Maxtor 250 SATA drive, however I can't get the board to
recognize the drive. On the Bios boot up the Silicon bios screen shows
no drive attached on either port. I've tried disconnecting everything
except the video and cd burner with just the SATA drive and no luck.
I've loaded the drivers (base mode) on to a floppy to load WinXP Pro on
the SATA drive and no luck. The drive warms up and hums so it's working
but the SATA ports seem to be the problem. I've tried different SATA
cords and different power connectors. Has anyone else had this problem
and is there a way to get this working? I need help. I'm thinking the
Gigabyte board is the problem, however it could be the Sil3112 bios
which I can't update until I get it to recognize a connected drive. Any
help would be great. Thanks.

In the BIOS ( Integrated Peripherals section), Set 'Serial ATA Function' to
BASE.

Did that already. Set boot order to SATA as well. Still get the "no
device connected" error.

Here's what I got from Gigabyte tech support. I gave up and bought an
add in card and everything is working fine. I'll probably be upgrading
board and processor soon and I guess it's back to Asus or Abit for me.
Sad

Answer : Hi

It should be auto detect, please check the drive and sata cable by
swapping them out to further troubleshoot the issue.

Thank you

Question : You seem to have misunderstood my question. Let me clarify.
When I boot up it shows "no device connected" on the Sil bios screen.
Gigabyte bios is set correctly with Onboard H/W Serial ATA enabled and
mode is set to Base. However it simply won't recognize the drive as
connected on either port. Furthermore the drive has been tested on an
add in card and works fine. So I'm wondering if there is something else
that could be causing the drive to not be detected? I have tried
multiple cables and power sources. Is it possible that both ports on
the board are bad?

Answer : Dear customer,

If you want the SATA HDDs as the boot drive, it"s recommended that you
install them on SATA0_Sil and SATA1_Sil.

If you have only one SATA HDD or two SATA HDDs need to work
independently, it will need to set it to "BASE" configuration.

In the BIOS - Make sure the "Onboard H/W Serial ATA " is enable and set
the "Serial ATA Function" to "BASE"under the "Integrated Peripheral".

You need to prepare the RAID driver on the floppy disk.
1) Browse the M/B utility CD.
2) Open the "bootdrv" folder.
3) Double click "Menu".
4) Type the number for the needed driver (Sil). It will copy the driver
to the floppy disk automatically.

When you boot from the CD and the Windows setup screen comes up, press
"F6" to install the 3rd party driver and follow the instruction to
install the OS.

Thank you

Question : I am trying to install a Serial ATA drive in Base mode.
This will replace my current setup of 2 drives in a Raid 0 mode on
PATA. When booting up however I get a 'drives not found' error on the
Sil bootup screen and Windows cannot find the drive either when booting
in my previous raid setup. What can I do?
