80GB HD and the 503+

Many thanks for that reminder Robert, I am still using the modified BIOS for
the AT power supply, but will an updated BIOS be OK with it.

So will it be best to put This HD on this PA-2013 with the ATX power supply,
though I would no doubt have to update if available this BIOS as well.

Or get an ATX power supply for the 503+ That will bring a on Job90's
face, though the 503+ has undergone major surgery since I gave up trying
to get an AU13. With even the ISA soundcard and combined CDROM controller
along with the trusty old CDdrive, replaced with PCI sound, CD-RWriter and a
52x CD so perhaps an uprated power supply would be a good idea, though I have
not experienced any problems with the AT power supply. (touch wood)

I don't see any reason to replace the AT power supply with an ATX unless you
are experiencing problems with the AT, though after some upgrading you may
put more stress on the good 'ole AT PS. If you are using the JE4333APM bios
it should be fine. I don't remember what the last PA-2013 bios (beta) was
but I'm sure we can find it somewhere. I don't think there would be any
performance difference whether you used it on the 503+ or the 2013.

I seem to have at least 7 or 8 copies on the HD's of the 503+ & 2013 but
a reboot of the 503+ shows JE4333[APM] so this is OK.
Oh, I could have used (AIDA32 a nice ultility) for this info without a reboot.

I would not think that the 80GB HD will place too much on the
AT power supply, bearing in mind I have probably taken some
load off with modern PCI replacing things like the ISA sound/CDcontroller,
the one that was as long as the MB, though the PCI slots are filling up.

So the installation begins, but I will keep an eye open for AT power supply problems.

Let me know how it goes- I'm a little concerned now, after reading Tim
Stinnett's notes in the je4333apm zip file, it mentions the JE4333 bios
supported hard drives up to 65GB, but don't know for sure beyond that.

I agree, that all I could find is this 65GB limit, so I choose to DL the
Maxtor utilities from their site (bare drives without gizzmos are cheaper)
They create a boot-able floppy which after answering a few questions and
making choices (in my case I wanted four partions) hit enter, and hey
presto in two minutes it partitioned and formatted them.
I was amazed as to how fast the process was.

Though I have discovered since that M$ have an updated fdisk.

Though I have not found one for W95 yet.
I have not tried this yet, but when I get tired of the (very similar to the old
Seagate big HD utility from the 1995ish blue banner) I will.

I had to disconnect the CD-ROM as I had run out of power leads, though
I think it might not be a good idea to double up power leads in view of the AT PS.
The 503+ now has
20GB main drive
80GB slave drive

A minor blip or two;

Problem one;
I had installed the 80Gb as slave, (on original 503+ HD cable, 40pin)
Everything appeared fine with no problems.
Master 20GB Maxtor 92041U4 (three partitions)
Secondary 80GB Maxtor 6Y080L0 (four partitions)

I then decided to install Linux, this gave problems as the choice was
to install this on the last partition of 80GB HD. This failed as drive partitions
were not identified correctly on the 80GB by Linux setup partition section.

I finally changed over drives as;
Master 80GB Maxtor 6Y080L0 (four partitions)
Secondary 20GB Maxtor 92041U4 (three partitions)

Linux installed fine without problems on last partition of the 20GB.
The 503+ is now a W98SE/Mandrake 9.1 dual-boot setup.

I cannot explain as to why Linux did not see the partitions correctly
on the 80GB as I was getting this type of message, amongst others;
(errors in extended partition 798751 when trying to partition it in 9.1)
I did use the Maxtor utilities to format and partition the 80GB drive.

Problem two;
Since I swapped HD's and installed the dual-boot I am now finding
that despite not using PC at times the access HD LED comes on at
random times. This is usually after rebooting between the two OS's
in Linux and W98Se.

Problem two was my fault.:-{
I had left the second CD drive (which I had pulled the power cable
from to power the second HD) but the other leads were still connected.

But I am fast running out of slots on the 503+, just one ISA left until
I replaced a PCI modem with an external one.
