Hi
I have just updated my motherboard to the above with a view to getting a
800MHz CPU.
I am new to Intel upgrades, being used to building AMD systems.
Is it possible to temporarily run a 800MHz chip with PC2100 memory. I want
to upgrade gradually.
The MSI site seems to indicate that this is possible or do I need PC3200
straight away?
Paul

It is a question of how default settings are for the bios. With a new
board, the board will at first boot use these defaults. It should
'smell' that the cpu is for fsb800, which means that motherboard and
ram runs 200 MHz (4x200=800, quad-pumped cpu).

I do not know it that well. I have just build one system with 865
neo-L. And I do not have it in house any more.

Then if you make the first boot with pc3200 ram, it should be possible
to set in bios a special userdefined setting.

But that could mean, that motherboard fsb has to be set to 133, so it
will make your multiplier locked cpu run substantially slower.

133/200, at only 66 % of nominal speed.

Ram is cheaper today than it used to be.

best regards

Hi JK
Thanks for replying. You have confirmed what I thought might happen. I shall
consider buying the CPU and new memory at the same time.
I have read that the 865PE chipset is fussy about the type of memory used.
The board is currently running a 2000MHz P4 at 400 FSB with two sticks of
PC2100 generic memory. I had three sticks to play with at the time I built
the system and one of them was rejected.
I can get generic or Corsair memory at a significantly higher cost.
What type of memory did you use on the system you built?

I have an 865PE Neo-LS, running Kingston HyperX 3200 - dual channel. I am
running Turbo mode, SPD memory settings, and my system is rock solid.
