Why is my 7900 GTO clocked faster than the 8800 ? - My 7900 GTO has a core clock of 650 mhz. The typical 8800 at NewEgg is clocked around 576 mhz. Are the 8800 range of cards only DX10 compatible as i am going to build a
new high end system but want to stay with Win XP operating system.

I ask this as www.scan.co.uk only show the 8800 range as DX10

I think you're looking at this the wrong way. Don't think 'only' DX10
compatible, think 'up to' DX10 compatible. DX is backward compatible.
So, a DX10 card would do DX10, DX9, DX8, etc... All 8800 cards work
fine with WinXP.

dx 10 is supported by Vista only.

OK, just to straighten things out a bit here. *Any* of the nVidia based
8xxx series cards are DX10 compatible. (And also backwards compatible
with earlier DX versions) From the lowly 8400 (available from about
$40US) to the mighty 8800GTX (available for up to $740US)

However, if you are staying with WinXP, DX10 compatibility will do
nothing for you, as Micro$oft has said that DX10 will be for Windows
Vista only.

An 8800 series card is desirable for XP because nothing runs DX9 games
faster than they do. The 8800GT or the new G92 8800GTS are currently the
sweet spot for $$$/performance.
