Guys,

I am building a new system and am up to deciding which video card.

Price isn't the limitor but the GTX is ~11" long which would go right into
my drive bays so is it worth the extra performance to loose a drive or two?

I am looking forward to playing UT2k7 and Crysis.

I would like to play them at 1600X1200 will all the bells and whistles on.

Thanks!

Ya know, if price is not a limiter, why not get a new case that will
accomodate all your hardware? You could even include upgraded P/S to
make sure you have enough power.

Oh, I am only going to be running 1280X1024 or possibly 1600X1200 LCDs.

Hope this helps...

Thanks for the advice, Bill.

To be honest I really like my case, it's a nice aluminum case with great fan
placement, a filter for the incoming air, twin fans in front of my twin
Raptor drives, keeping them cool and an exhaust fun in the top.

It is a nice size that fits everything else wonderfully and I even like the
colour!

As for my power supply it's a PC Power and Cooling 750, I think that should
be more than enough any video card (I would put a PC P&C unit against any
other company's PS any day!).

I guess I am wondering if I will see a different in cards at 1600X1200 at
max settings.

I was thinking that any case that would take an E-ATX motherboard
would have plenty fo room for long video cards.

Something like:

Yep, excellent power supplies. If you were looking to go SLI with the
GTX's You might want to step up to the PC P and C Turbo Cool 1000W P/S
though.

Couldn't say. I haven't seen the games yet. If an 8800 GTX doesn't let
you run with all the bells and whistles at 1600x1200 the only present
alternitive is going SLI.

you can flame my ass if you want to but before I would spend 500 plus on a
video card to game.
I would buy a ps3 or an xbox 360. They just want to much for the 88xx series
although they
are going to be releasing a cheaper version soon. Tom's Hardware had a
review on it.
Less memory but dx10 ready.

You can buy an 8800GTS with a game (Dark Messiah) for $300 at new egg.
You do not need to spend $500 to get a DX10 card, but you can if you can
afford it. As you mention, the price point will continue to fall further
as less expensive models appear very soon.

This is not news, anyone who uses a PC as a gaming platform understands
that it is by far the most expensive gaming platform.

Most importantly, that $300 gets you state of the art hardware that
gaming consoles are simply not engineered to display. So maybe you
personally do not think it is a value, many do, and more will.

I went with full size tower cases on my two main machines which gives
plenty of room inside. The other 3 are mid size.

And some time earlier this winter I believe, the number of PCs for
gaming surpassed gaming consoles.

That is good, great even (and expected with Vista's release) for gaming
in general and PC gaming, double plus good.

This year expect one video card per display, and multi-monitor support
standardized (for games). The GeForce 8 series, with their dual SLI
connectors hint at that already. Of course, you crusty flight simmers
enjoy multi-monitors most likely already, so no great gain there.

However, multi-core CPUs are wonderful for (optimized) flight sims, and
the idea(l) of one core (or two) per gpu core (or two) per monitor per
eyeball is kinda exciting for any game, not just simming. Supreme
Commander is a worthy game for dual monitors methinks.

That gear all adds up, and when a PS3 costs less than one monitor...or a
Wii less than a flight stick, you better love your hobby and your banker!

I've been playing that for a few days now and it's a really good game. A bit
of a steep learning curve, but very immersive.

True, but both Computer world and ZDNet are saying to wait until at
least SP-1 comes out and particularly for gaming. They start out by
saying it's the best Windows ever, but don't buy it.
http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasi...rticleI
(Watch out for line wrap)
Their stand is that Vista will be a great system (except they hate
DRM) and once the hardware and drivers are available it will be one
whale of a gaming system. The also say that Vista Ultimate will be the
only package to use for the gamers. Once DX-10 is up and running with
compatible hard ware (8800 series is the only video card I know of
that is DX-10 capable) they should provide graphics and speed only
dreamed of before.

Schneier on Security has a lot to say about DRM and really takes MS to
task. Use the above link and then go to his personal Blog. I tried a
link to his personal blog but it comes out identical to the one above.
or you can go to ZDNet http://blogs.zdnet.com/security/?p=28 and click
on the link to "Personal Blog" in the article.

MS is disputing a bit of this<Smile) I'd be hard pressed to say how
accurate either is at present, but I do have my suspicions about DRM.

Most of my computers are multi monitor capable at present.<Smile) Going
SLI on the big computer would give me 4 monitors, but another big
video card and 3 more big monitors is a bit out of the budget at
present. Particularly when I have the real thing setting in a snow
bound hangar.<Smile)

20 to 22" monitors are now down in the $300 range although I have two
grand in the big machine when the OS is included. 6 months ago this
Samsung 204B (20.1") was well over $500 and now they are available at
Best Buy for just a bit over $300. OTOH on-line I can find them for
well under $300 and 22" wide screen brand name LCD monitors from
about $300 to the upper $300 range.

Ur right, simmers can put a lot into this. OTOH you should see what it
costs to fly a higher performance, complex, retract IRL for a year.
<Smile)

IRL I'll take the Deb over simming any day of the week, but
unfortunately IRL there are far more days here in Michigan where I can
fly FSX compared to flying the Deb and I'm instrument rated.. On top
of that I don't have to shovel snow to get FSX or FS9
running...usually.

Damn, i've ordered it and still haven't received anything, hope it will
arrive soon ... it's from the same guy as Total Annihiliation, one of the

I'm still exploring the demo, and it is difficult to take in the
somewhat clumsy camera management, the tricky specifics of what does
what and the even more tricky specifics of getting them to do it all, at
a medium pace. All the while, forgetting anything I knew about TA,
completely different feel to the whole game, though remarkably similar
in many ways.

The good news is that once I get over the hump, the slick way-pointing
system and the multi-patrol point waypointing will be fantastic for
setting up epic battle lines of countless numbers of little things
blasting each other to bits.

I run the demo at 1920x1440x75Hz with no FSAA, all sliders at max, and
it looks and runs well enough, with obvious room for improvement in
large unit-filled maps.

I'm ready for three GPU motherboards...drop in three reasonably priced
GeForce8 class cards with three lcd panels and expect spectacular
performance.

I'm not kidding, screw Vista, give me DirectX9.0L and multi-gpu
integration in XP SP3 and give it to me yesterday.

Thank you for sharing all of that, it was very informative! Though you
might not thank me back after I now put you on the spot: Since you have
experience, could you help with an un-Solved problem?

Q: What is the current best triple-screen solution for Windows gaming?

Difficulty: Must be Vista Certified.

Extra Credit: Open hardware over proprietary manufacturing, but function
over form.

I once saw a site that had custom built solutions, but Google fails me
for a link...
