Hi
I have been in possession of an Epox 8K7A+ motherboard for over a year
and a half.
I have a 1.4 GHz Athlon sitting on it, and would now like to upgrade
this processor...
Question is: would you advise that I either:
1) Replace both the board and the processor....(bearing in mind this
motherboard is getting quite mature) or...
2) Replace only the processor (in which case how fast a processor will
my current board take - or will it quite happily support any of the
Athlon family including the new super-duper specs of Athlons?)
Thanks in advance

It depends on how high you want to go. The 8K7A+ uses the AMD 761
chipset, which is limited to 266MHz FSB speed - all of the most recent
Athlons (Barton core) require a 333MHz FSB.
From what I've read, the 8K7A+ will support an XP 2400+ (and should,
in theory, support the 266MHz version of the 2600+). You'll probably
need to flash a newer BIOS version.

Depends what you want to spend and what you use your computer for. If you
upgrade your board, you are going to want memory faster than your old pc2100
besides the cpu. I just installed an XP2400+ on my 8K7A+ for $135.00 cdn. I
might be slightly biased because I'm a huge fan of the 8K7A boards and I
don't think the gains in performance warrant the expense. If it were me and
my board was running ok, I'd just upgrade the cpu.

Out of interest, when you moved up to a 2400+, what heatsink did you
go for...
I take it the one you were previously using would be no use or could I
retain my original heatsink (I know the new Athlons run cooler...)<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: 8K7A+ and processor |

Well...
I have more-or-less decided to keep my motherboard and go for the
2400+ upgrade.
A nice and cheap option (60GBP or so only), though maybe in a year or
so's time I may consider a "major" upgrade, but would like time to
spec out my ideal system.
Thanks all who replied.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: 8K7A+ and processor |
