Hi,
I've got Windows XP installed on my 8KNXP, with all the realtek AC'97 audio
drivers. I used to have a nice little sound manager icon in my taskbar
that, when double-clicked, would allow me access the sound properties (6 tab
window with speaker setup, the UAJ (auto-detection for input/output speak)
setup, speaker test, etc. ). This icon has disappeared from the taskbar.
I've tried uninstalling (add/remove programs) and reinstalling the latest
realtek drivers, but to no avail; the icon still does not appear. If I try
to run windows\soundman.exe directly, it shows up in the process list, but
the config window doesn't appear.
My baisc sound still works, but I can't access / configure the UAJ at all
which is driving me nuts! I've run out of ideas what to try!
Any suggestions would incredibly appreciated! Please help!!
Thanks!

I have noticed some peculiar behavior in Windows XP since installing it
on a newly built GA-8KNXP motherboard-based system. In particular, the
system has created new identities of myself, even though I am the only
user of the computer and have never created new users in this
installation. I confirm this by opening Windows Explorer, navigating to
Documents and Settings and find that there are now two of me!
I also noticed that some of the icons in the notification area (far
right) of the task bar were missing from the display (not just hidden).
I found them when I clicked on Start | Log off | Log off | then
selecting my name again from the displayed list (of course there is only
one, that is, me). When I logged back on, my alter ego is now present
with my missing icons.
See if this gambit can make your sound icon reappear. If so, then
figure out why the OS is creating new identities (personalities).
Good luck!

Thanks,
After hours (no exageration) of installing, uninstalling, trying new
drivers, tearing my hair out, etc. I finally managed to get the sound back.
The alsndmgr.cpl applet in the windows was the key. Not sure if just by
opening the cpl applet by hand (right click, open with ctrl-panel) is what
got it to work or not, but it is back now, and I am content.
Hopefully it stays back.
