Post subject: 8KTA3+ RAID & WinMe
Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>mainboard>epox (more info?)

I just upgraded my system from Win98se to WinMe. When I look at the
HPT370A in the device manager, the device manager says "Wwindows stopped
responding wile attempting to start this device and therefore will never
attempt to start this device again." I am running the ver 2.32 driver.

I have these drives connected to the RAID ports:
(2) IBM 60GB drives (master & slave) on the primary port. Currently not
configured as a RAID array, they were config'ed as a mirror array.
Disconnecting the slave drive has no effect.
(1) Maxtor 8GB drive as the slave on the secondary port.

768MB RAM
Athlon Tbird 1.3GHz proc
no overclocking

Any thoughts on how to get RAID working with WinMe?

Thanks,

Well, duh, I may have found the solution - just ignore WinMe's little
gripes and let the hardware do its own thing. Apparently the Highpoint
370A RAID controller doesn't need Windows to "start" it. The RAID
controller works just fine (probably better) without Bill Gates' help.
The 2 IBM 60GB drives are back to being a mirror array.

I went to EPoX's UK site and DL'ed and flashed the latest BIOS (9-Apr-
03). Also DL'ed and installed the HPT ver 2.34 driver. Didn't help WinMe
but didn't hurt either.

Cheers,

Chuck,

Just my two cents here, I tried to email directly but it was returned. I
hope this avoids creating as OS
debate. I have extensive experience with all of the Microsoft OS platforms
and if possible I would abandon using Windows ME for either an upgrade to
Windows XP or a return to Windows 98. XP is more up to date but 98 is a
stable work horse that I still use on one of my systems at home.
In troubleshooting computers WindowsME did help me with the amount of
overtime I had to work but it was also a problematic pain in the rear as
well.

My Two Cents!

Michael,
I had heard plenty of negative press re: WinMe and stuck it out with
Win98se for as long as I could. I now have a desktop running dual-boot
XP-home & WinMe, a laptop running XP-home and a desktop running WinMe.
So far, the WinMe systems are as stable or more stable than Win98se. It
may just be that reinstalling the OS cleans up enough shit that it
matter more that I have a new OS rather than which OS it is. I'd run XP
on all my machines except for some apps I have that won't run on XP.
