Loaded the drivers Epox ship with this booard - but can't find any kind of
sound control panel.
Should there be one - and if not, anyone know of a good app for WinXP sound
control (with equaliser, etc - Winamp appears to be Winamp rather than
Windows-specific).

TIA

You should have something in control panel that is called "Nvidia Nforce
Control Panel". If not then something is set up wrong. Check cmos and make
sure all sound options like AC97 is turned on in the "Integrated
Peripherals" section. If still no joy then download the Nforce driver from
Nvidia and install it.

Another question: how do I connect to the additional sound outputs for
a 'front of case' connectors' like the headphone jack. There is a pin
array on the MB that the manual implies in the right thing, but it has
some jumpers on it that seem inportant for the on board sound
connectors. Do I remove the jumpers and simply slide the little
doohikies from the front Headphone jacks over them?

Thanks

Yep that's what you do. The connectors on the front of the case serve as the jumpers. When you
plug in your headphones it disables the rear connectors. At least that's the way it works on mt
8rda+.
