I currently have a 2000XP palomino chip running with no overclock on my
8k5a2+. If I change the cpu to a 2500 Barton(is this possible for starters?)
will I be abale to overclock it to any where near a 3000-3200? Its seems to
me that the 2500 is very overclockable. I have 2 sticks of 2700 RAM if that
helps.

thanks

Is it possible, yes.

Will you be able to OC a 2500+ Barton to 3200+, no. 3000+, most likely no.
2800+, almost assured.

I speak from experience, and your milage will vary. If you can get it to
3000+, stably, let us know, that's a feat.

I have the setup you're going to (Epox EP-8K5A2+ w/ 2500+ Barton).
I'm running PC3200 memory, so upping the FSB to 166MHz (333DDR) was no
problem. I'm at the max available multiplier for the 8K5A2+, 12.5, for an
effective speed of 2075MHz (reported as 2800+ by the BIOS) with no stability
problems. No voltage adjustments needed.
I may be wrong here, but if I weren't too lazy to do the "wire in the socket
holes" trick to raise the multiplier to 13 or 13.5, I'd *guess* it wouldn't
be a problem.
I base the *guess* on the fact that I have two other 2500+'s running at
11x200 in NForce2 motherboards, and I can't see why a KT333 chipset would be
bothered by a higher multiplier if the FSB stayed at 166MHz.

Ok, so i'm gonna buy a tray 2500xp as I already have a suitable cooler, will
I need to unlock the cpu on this board or did i read correctly on
www.over-clock.com AMD chips are now supplied unclocked? So that I can just
plug it in and twiddle.

Are also on a KT333 chipset? Even if you are not, that's rather impressive
for air cooling.
