What causes a pc to take five minutes to reboot?
System was working fine for two years, until now.
System will do a cold boot, provided that it has been off for a while.
System will also now not boot from power disconect/reconect.
I have already tried flashing bios and reinstalling Winxp.
Ram tested fine.
System specs:
Athlon 1800+ XP
512 meg ram
epox 8kha+
geforce 3
game theater xp
ibm 60g hard drive
sparkle 400 watt ps
win xp pro
The bios code on the epox board says "FF" until it finally starts boot
process.
Could the bios chip be going bad or maybe the battery?
How does one go about testing a power supply? >> Stay informed about: 8kha+ boot problem |

It looks like I have the bulging, leaking capacitor problem
If I replace the board with the same model board, would I have to
reformat and reinstall windows, or will it reconize the existing hard
drive? >> Stay informed about: 8kha+ boot problem |

If you change your mobo with exactly the same model board, you'll have
nothing to do. Windows will be fully operational.

Had the bulgy capacitor problem with my 8KHA+. Would keep switching off on
a reboot or cold boot. Once up it would work fine. It was taking more and
more attempts to get the thing to boot so I replaced it with a new board
which ended up being an MSI MSI KT400 based board (as it was cheap).
You can install a new board without having to do a total reinstall of
Windows.
See Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 824125
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;824125
for details.
Basically it says if you can boot into Windows on your existing board, then
do so. Insert your windows CD and run the setup program from the CD.
Select the upgrade option which comes up then when your machines reboots,
switch it off.
Replace your board.
Boot the machine and Windows setup will do an upgrade. Your apps/settings
will remain in place but Windows will search for and install any new
drivers required by your board.
You then reapply any service packs / windows updates and voila.
This procedure worked for me when I replaced my 8KHA+ in my W2K server with
the MSI mobo.
Worth a try. If it doesn't work you can do a reinstall, if it does you've
saved a wad of time.

If it's the same model board, you don't even have to do a repair install.
You only have to do that when going to a motherboard with a different
chipset. I recently upgraded a WinXP system's Nforce1 motherboard to
Nforce2 and did not even have to do anything, other than reboot when it
found new hardware.

Thanks for your reply, It looks like I'm going to have to get a
diferent brand board, and if I can do that without refomating
all the better. I didn't think it was at all possible.
