Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>mainboard>asus (more info?)

I have a year old A7N8X with two 512 PC2100 sticks in slots 1 and 3. The
memory is cheap-o crap (but I knew that already) and had errors from the
time I put it together.

[The errors were crashing during DVD playback and games.]

It's running at 166 (or whatever the default for PC2100 is) FSB.

Memtest86 reported thousands of errors until I put the memory voltage up to
2.8 (max for the MOBO) and then stayed at around 100 or so. It worked well
enough for me not to bother getting better memory.

Recently though it is acting differently, and I'd like to know if maybe I
should consider replacing the board as well as the memory. It will POST up
to the point where the "memory test" starts (the cheesy cycle through the
memory thing) and it simply stops. It's not hung though, if I use the ESC
key a couple of times it goes on fine (but doesnt do the cycle, just reports
how much memory there is and continues with POST).

So my question is, is the memory still a good bet as the problem or should I
look for something else too?

Currently the plan is to get a stick of Crucial PC2700 1gig to replace the
two 512 sticks. Is that what you would recommend?

I do not care to overclock or care much about fine-tuning performance. I
just want to have my games not crash. Gotta get that Desert Combat fix...

Thanks!

OK to start with PC2100 is 133MHz.
DDR266
..
PC2700 is 166MHz
DDR333

What Cpu do you have?
XP2000, XP2100, XP2400, XP2800?
Anything that runs on a 333 Fsb needs DDR333 ram(PC2700)
You can use PC2700 but you need to run the Cpu in sync with memory(both same
speed(166MHz).
With a cpu that runs on a 266Fsb you need DDR266.
Again run in sync(memory at 133MHz)

It is possible to cause a component to fail prematurely by
overvoltage. Running the memory at MAX could do what you describe.

It's an XP2700+ CPU, I had PC2100 memory with it. So I probably had memory
designed for 133 running at 166. (Oops)

I have some PC2700 memory in there now that seems to have reduced the
crashing in games. (Havent had it in there long enough to know for sure.)

Thanks for the info.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I sold 20 A7N8X Deluxe computers because the one I had worked so damn well.
I cannot begin to explain the problems I had with those 20 systems. THEY
are extreamly picky on the type of RAM you use. I tried infinion and micron
moduals with no problems until about a month later when the systems started
to crash.

Solved all the problems using Kingston (samsung) moduals.

I have made it my policy to purchase samsung moduals for my motherboards
(cheap and reliable) or for high end systems corsair (love their products
$$$).
