I apparently have a dead motherboard. All I get are long beeps about 3
seconds apart thaty run on continually. Nothing else happens -- nothing on
the screen at all. I have tried removing everything but the cpu. Still
the same beeps over and over. I've reset CMOS. No improvement. I've
tried three different cpus, two of which I am certain function okay. No
improvement.

Does anybody in the forum know how to interpret the post beeps. Can you
tell me what these mean. Thanks, I appreciate your help.

For an Award BIOS (from an even earlier Asus board) -

"Award Bios Beep codes for this board:

1. Short beep when displaying logo = no error during post.

2. Long beeps in an endless loop = No Dram installed or detected.

3. One long beep followed by three short beeps = video card not found or
video memory bad.

4. High frequency beeps when system is working = CPU overheated.
System running at a lower frequency.

So maybe the Northbridge has failed (has the memory controller in it).
Or the source of power for the memory DIMMs has failed. Something
is preventing the memory from being detected. AFAIK, the board won't beep
if BIOS code wasn't executing, so it means BIOS code is being read.
And for that to happen, the bus path through Northbridge and Southbridge,
to the BIOS chip, is intact. So something on the memory busses, on the
side of the Northbridge, is not working right.

Removing all memory should give the long beeps. With all memory out, take
one stick, and try it individually, in each of the slots. If there
is just one bad slot, you might get lucky.

Have a sniff around the memory. Examine the gold fingers on all
sticks. Look for burn marks. Sniff for a burnt smell. Examine
the small resistors and bypass capacitors on the DIMM, for evidence
of a short or frying. Also, examine the motherboard, especially any
power circuitry near the DIMM slots (upper right corner, near
the 20 pin connector ?). While you are at it, examine the
electrolytic capacitors for bulging tops. Or for a brown stain
underneath the base of the capacitors. The stain means the electrolyte
has leaked out. Regulator circuit failure could come soon after
(a matter of weeks).

I had similar problems with my A8N-SLI and ended up (just yesterday)
buying a new board for $129! Solved all my problems. I took the whole
case to a small shop who tested eveything for $30 and gave me 50%
credit to the new board. They tested everything in a day, good deal.

I tried several sticks of good memory in all three slots. Didn't notice
any burning smell or evidence that anything overheated or fried. Checked
the circuitry all aroound the upper right and the capacitors. Still the
same unending beeps. From what you said, there must be something with the
northbridge going on.

Thanks very much for your help.
