This board has 2 PCIe slots and it seems that only the blue PCIe slot can be
used for a single video card and both slots can only be used for an SLI
configuration. Is there any way to use both slots with 2 different video
cards not in a SLI configuration.
Really need some help on this.
TIA,

Hi John
I use already for some years 3 different video cards on my A8N-SLI Deluxe
with 6 or 7 monitors without any problem
In the 2 PCIe slots I have a XFX Nividia 6800GT with 2 monitors and a
Matrox Parhelia APVe with 3 monitors
Furthermore a PCI slot with a XFX Nvidia FX5200 with 1 or 2 monitors
There is one limitation though, I can use only oder drivers

Jan,
I'm interested in your comments, and would appreciate a clarification,
if you don't mind. Just how many of those combinations were you able
to use simultaneously? From your comment, it would seem that you were
able to run them "all" at the same time, but I'm afraia that I'm
misinterpreting what you are saying. Do you mean you are able to run
any (one) of the varius video card(s), or can you run two or more at
once?

Hi Charlie
Your first interprtetation is correct, I can use all 3 video cards
(with up to 7 monitors connected) at the same time.

I'm not running the Deluxe version and when I put a video card in each PCIe
slot the system won't even post.
One card is a Radeon 350 256MB and the other is a 8600GT OC 512MB. Any ideas
on this?

Hi John
Does your mobo have the latest BIOS ?
What OS are you using? Hopefully XP, because Vista does mostly not accept
more the 1 driver type
Here is an article on Tom's Hardware where they got an ATI and Nvidia card
combination working.
http://www.tomshardware.com/2004/11/23/nvidia/page32.html
Not the same graphical cards as you have, but maybe still some usefull info.

It has the latest BIOS, there's a new BIOS, but it's still in BETA. I'm
dual booting XP and Vista, but the problem is not with an OS. The problem
is that the system won't even POST with two cards installed. I had to RMA
the NVidia card because I was getting a BSOD in Vista and terrible DVD
playback in and other problems in XP.
I'll have to put this thread on hold till I get the replacement card from
BFG, in about a week and a half. Thanks for all your replies and I'll be
getting back to you as soon as I get the new card.

I received a new 8600 GT from BFG and had the same problem with OS lockups
on both XP and Vista, both 32 bit.
I checked everthing, BIOS settings, SLI card between PCIe slots, latest
NVidia drivers, ran CCleaner to get rid of the
previous ATI drivers and all to no avail. After some more research I
believe I found the problem, although the solution
is a new MB.
Apparently, some PCIe 2.0 vids do not work well with some PCIe 1.0 slots.
It's an interface problem. My rig is over 3
years old and I've been wanting to upgrade anyway and this problem tells me
it's time to upgrade.
Thanks for your all your help.

your problem may be much simpler. Please specify all of the hardware
in your system, including CPU. If your rig is > 3 years old, I suspect
that the +12V supply may not be able to handle the load. The +12V is
the principal supply that powers the CPU, any modern video card, your
hard-disk(s), DVD/CD rom-drives.Typical symptom of insufficient +12V
current is the general flakiness that you describe. Highly unlikely
that the PCIe2.0 spec on the 8600 has anything to do with the problem.
I keep close track of reports of any such interface problems and yours
is the first speculation of that, especially with the A8N-SLI. I have
a A8N32-SLI and it runs flawlessly with a 8800GT (PCIe 2.0)....

My rig has the following:
Antec 430W with a 24 pin power connector and a 4 pin CPU connector,
A8N-SLI Proactive Series,
AMD 4200 CPU,
2x1GB medium performance PC3200 OCZ RAM,
ATI Radeon X300 Video Card,
1 Memorex DVD on PATA,
2-36GB WD Raptors on SATA,
1 Floppy,
1 WinTV USB2 card,
1 Samsumg 226BW and 1 Samsung 932B on the X300.
Bios is at default settings (no OC'ing) and in BIOS and Asus Probe all temps
are fine.
Except for the MB which is 2 1/2 yrs old and the CPU which 3 yrs old,
everything else is 3 1/2 yrs old.
Do you think a new 550 or 650 power supply could solve this?
TIA,

What is the +12V current rating on your Antec supply ????
Those Raptors will guzzle quite a bit of surge current. The max +12V
current they will guzzle should be on the label.
Before running out and getting a new power-supply, you should first
try reducing the current by removing non-essentials that potentially
load the +12V and see if the stability problems go away.
For example, If you remove the Radeon and use just the 8600 on its
own, do you still get the instability?
Are your Raptors in RAID0 ( If so, an overkill on your system
btw...the potential disadvantages outweigh the advantages. )
If not, you might try disconnecting one of the disks to reduce the
+12V power-consumption and see if stability returns.
Or if you underclock the processor you will also reduce the +12V
current.
Some smart experimenting might at least give a better pointer to the
problem.

+12v +12v -12v
0.18A 0.15A 1.0A
0.4A 0.4A 0A
Asus probe reads +12.0 at 11.84V

5VDC 0.70A
12VDC 0.75A

I'm down to one Raptor and one Maxtor drive

Yes

No RAID used.

I'll try that

I'll experiment and get back to you

I assume you really mean 18 amps and 15 amps max on the +12V ??
In which case, it should be quite sufficient.
The -12V is not used by your system.

That's also fine.

BAD.
Do you get the BSODs in any Desktop Apps, or only when you are running
3D games?

I did a clean install of XP and after removing some devices I got both cards
to work, although, the X300 will only work in the x16 slot, the slot nearest
the CPU and the 8600 in the x1 slot the furthest from the CPU.
I've given up in Vista for now, too many app incompatibilities, printer
problems, slow boot and I don't like the GUI. In any case, I only got the
BSOD when running two monitors on the 8600 and running the tv tuner and some
other apps. I'm not a gamer or do heavy video. I plugged the disconnected
devices back in, one at a time, and everthing is stable, so far, so good.
I'm running the tv card on the X300 and everything else on the 8600. I'm
going to upgrade my rig relatively soon and knowing the limitations of the
X300 I know to get a board that runs 2 x16 slots in normal mode (not SLI).
Thanks for helping me solve this.
