hey all,
i have a TYAN S1854 Trinity 400 (bios - Rev. 1.07)
mobo that only supports ATA 66, so i bought a Promise
Ultra100 Tx2 to get ATA100.
i also had an Adaptec AHA-1542CF sitting around so i
decided to put that in the ISA slot. so here is what
this all boils down to:
Tyan mobo ATA controller ->
primary (master) : Acer CD-ROM drive
primary (slave) :
secondary (master) :
secondary (slave) :
Promise ATA controller ->
primary (master) : 40 GB Maxtor HDD
primary (slave) :
secondary (master) : 80 GB Western Digital
HDD
secondary (slave) :
Adaptec SCSI controller ->
ID#0 : 1 GB IBM HDD
ID#1 : 1 GB IBM HDD
ID#2 : HP CD-R/RW
okay, so now in my BIOS i have the following boot
options (a mixture of):
A
C
D
E
F
SCSI
CDROM
LS/ZIP
and i really have no idea what is what. for some
reason if i set it to CDROM as first boot device,
nothing happens. the only thing that i have gotten to
boot from is the A drive (floppy).
what i want is to be able to boot from my Acer CD-ROM
drive on the mobo ATA controller (primary master), and
then once i get an operating system installed, boot
from an IBM HDD on the SCSI controller... i dont
know... this is just confusing, i am not sure how to
configure the BIOS, or how to boot my pc on anything
else besides the floppy.
thank you very much,

I'd very much like to know if you see a definite improvement in performance
by using the ATA100 adapter.

iceman, i will post some benchmarks if you like. but i dont have any
OS installed yet, so it may be a few days. is there anything specific
performance-wise you expect to see?

Hi et,
from a motherboard point of view, the Promise AND the Adpactec are SCSI
cards, because they bring their own BIOS. So your boot option would be in
the order CD-ROM, SCSI. The adapter with the lower UMA adress for its BIOS
is usually preferref at boot, so you should give the adaptec the lowest
adress possible which is usualy C800. You should also exclude this adress
space in the PnP-Bios configuration as reserved by ISA card.
To give you a personal tip: get rid of that ISA crap and buy one PCI SCSI
card on ebay. BTW, did you disable the floppy controller on the 1542?

I really don't need to see benchmarks, just want to see if you notice a
substantial performance boost in daily use.

I have 2 40G IDE WD drives on the motherboard IDE and a 9G SCSI on a TEKRAM
PCI SCSI adapter. I shadowed C800 in the bios and everything works fine.
I am considering adding a USB 2.0 PCI adapter. Is anyone else using USB
2.0?

Hello Andre,
thanks for the reply. to tell you the truth, i did get rid of the ISA
SCSI card because i decided it wasnt that important and i could easily
do without it. so i just kept the PCI ATA card and all works well. and
i did have floppy disabled on the SCSI ISA when i had it in the
computer.
oh and iceman, i dont know if i can give you a comparison because i
havent used this TYAN mobo for a long time, so i dont remember how the
ATA66 seemed, though i can tell you that it is pretty fast with the
ATA100 (at least i think so), compiling is very speedy and overall the
system seems to be running quick.
thanks for the help all
