Dear newsgroup
I'm having troubles with sdrams that are supported by my motherboard.
Chipset's Via 693A (SB is 686) and on the manual I've found that sdrams must
be choisen only after a visual inspection and they must have less than 16
memory chips x dimm.
I've found two sdram 256MB each with 8chip each, so I'm compatible with
them...(theorically)
But my trouble is: many chipset recognize memory by memory density (capacity
of the dimm / number of chips) and not by chip number! Doesn't Via 693A
follow first method?!?

Thanks in advance
and sorry for my English Wink

Mirko,

Most motherboards with the VIA 693 chipset require low density memory. With
all of the different configurations of chips available now, it is hard to
tell which is which sometimes. My best advice is to use one of the memory
selectors from one of these sites:

<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.crucial.com" target="_blank">www.crucial.com</a>

<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.kingston.com" target="_blank">www.kingston.com</a>

I prefer the Crucial brand memory myself, but it is personal preference.

So I need 256MB composed of 16 chip...against user's manual! Or not? Smile

I think that since the manual was written for your board there have been
many changes in the design of memory modules. The information there is
probably somewhat outdated. Personally, if you were looking to buy 2x256MB
modules, I would buy one Crucial brand module with part number CT64M64S4D7E
as the price would be slightly less than 2 256MB modules. I have never heard
of anyone having any problems with Crucial memory compatibility as long as
you buy the module they recommend.
