I am building a computer with an Abit AV8 motherboard and an Antec Sonata case
and GeForce FX 5700LE Optima video card. There is 1 gig of dual channel memory,
dvd/cd rom, and 120Gb SATA drive. Upon assembling the components, there was the
hold your breath moment as I turned on the power.

Nothing.

The POST display shows 20 (at least that is what is looks like.) I referred to
the manual for what that means. There is every other code in the manual -
except 20.

I have disconnected most everything to see if that will help. Still Code 20.

I am at your feet seeking suggestions on what to do next.

You might check to see if there are any motherboard to back plate
standoffs that don't line up with a screw hole and may be shorting out
the back plate to the MB. I am not familiar with this MB or what
processor it uses so don't know if there are other connectors that
need to be plugged in besides the ATX connector or not. Is your 1 gig
of memory one stick or more? How far does the POST get before the 20
comes up? Does it show a memory test?

What cpu did you guy?? I have the same board. I bought the new A64 3000+ 90u
and it would not boot, but had a display of "90". It takes the newest verion
of bios for this type cpu to work.

I had to buy a bios chip for $17, they mailed it to me right away and only
took 4 days. I popped it in and she booted right up.

Let me know, I have a spare bios chip I can hot flash and send you.
$20...( to cover the mail cost)

Double check that you have the floppy drive power cable correctly
plugged in... I had this happen and discovered I was off by one pin...

good luck

no post?
By any chance are you using a AMD .90mn chip?

If yes to these two questions I am guessing you have a 130nm chip bios chip.
In which case you need to flash the bios to at least version 15 to correct
the problem. (I had this problem, lol sucks don't it) the cure for the
problem is ordered a bios chip from Excaliburpc.Com the page address you
need is
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.excaliberpc.com/default.php?cPath=156_157&%20osCsid=3874bd18a580ebb3d78c17063152356e" target="_blank">http://www.excaliberpc.com/default.php?cPath=156_157&%20osCsid=3874bd1...80ebb3d</a>

if you have a 3rd Eye Ver. or just a AV8 they are the same. Or there's
another possibility you can try before the bios chip change, I read about it
later but had already changed the chip so I don't know if it will work and I
I think it's a work in the dark solution because you can't see the progress
onscreen. At boot up press alt + F2 then type the award flash utility
that's on a floppy with bios 15. Flash your bios.
