Post subject: Adding a hard drive

I have a feeling that this is gonna be one of those "man is this guy a moron"
questions, but I need to ask anyway.
I had a 30GB Western Digital drive stop working. It was the only drive on my HP
Pavilion, and one day it just would not boot. I tried to reinstall WinXP, but
it would not take. I have taken it to two local PC shops, and they cannot get
anything out of it, either.
I bought a new machine, and I have purchased an identical drive, with the
thought that I can copy the data on the existing (new) drive, including a
program like "Recover My Files" or similar, slave the old drive to it, and run
the recovery program. (I really don't want to do this on the new computer, in
case there was a virus McAfee didn't catch)
Here are the questions:
If I'm going to copy the new machine's HD to the virgin one I just purchased,
do I need to format the new drive first and load an OS?
I purchased an identical drive because I was also told that I could swap the
platters from the old drive to the new one to determine is there is a physical
problem with the drive. Am I snipe hunting?

That's not necessarily good if the drive was partly working.

Nope. The safest approach is to clone the original drive to the new
one using something like clonedisk from <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://invircible.com/resq.php" target="_blank">http://invircible.com/resq.php</a>

Yes, its not really practical to move the platters. It can be worth
moving the logic card from the new drive to the dead one tho.
What exactly happens when you try running WD's

They could not get it to boot, either. They said it was "dead"

Get it off the WD web site using the new PC and put it on a floppy.
