Goodbye Soyo, hello Asus. I'm throwing in the towel on my KT400
Dragon. The lockups have finally driven me over the edge and I need to
move on. I've followed this group religiously for the last 9 months
and have tried many, many, many of the suggestions to no avail. I've
never had a board that is so finicky. I feel I can spend more useful
time pursuing other endeavors then wasting it on this mistake.
Wish me luck with my newly ordered Asus A7N8X Deluxe Rev. 2 (although,
from what I have been able to find so far, I shouldn't need it).

Sounds like my experience exactly. I tried 10 months of messing
around trying to get my K7V dragon to run stable. I even talked with
their tech dept., sent them the board, and they did indeed duplicate
the same problems I had. Soyo exchanged it with another K7V Dragon.
Did exactly the same thing. Since then I have built 5 units with
Shuttle boards, and they all run stable as a rock.
Sometimes its best to move on. >> Stay informed about: Adiós Soyo |

Been there, done that!! I really wouldn't suggest buying one. Did you check
the Usenet for ASUS? There are far more severe problems associated with ASUS
boards. I would recommend ABIT, SHUTTLE, SOYO or ECS (yes, ECS,,,very cheap
and slow, but extremely stable.)

You will find all motherboard makers can have their lemons ...
If you take the time to download all the newest drivers for the
motherboard, and for any hardware like video and sound, before you
start the upgrade, then you will be one step ahead of the game! Just
be sure and put the drivers on CD or even floppy disks.
Also, check the motherboard's site for recommended ram for the
particular board you are thinking of buying. The one area you do not
want to cut corners on is the memory!
I tried taking shortcuts with my soyo kt333 dragon ultra black, and
had nothing but headaches.
Now that I am running all the latest drivers and the recommended ram,
I've had one of the most stable pc's ever.
Also, try and refrain from overclocking until you are sure that you
have a stable system!

Mortimer,
Good choice ! I owned a Soyo KT333 Dragon plus that was stable then
started to become unstable after eight months. I finally replaced the
board to an ASUS KT600 board after several weeks of troubleshooting.
Anyway, I couldn't believe how stable the ASUS board is. No more
clearing the CMOS all the time like Soyo boards, no more lockups. I
think you'll be happy with the A7N8X board that you plan on getting.
Anyway, I moved on just like others and I am glad I did.

If it doesn't work, and you've had it for eight months,,,,it's still
under warrantee. Soyo is still the most stable board I've had. My ASUS loves
to freeze up on 3d games. If you get another board, I had less problems with
Shuttle and Abit. Even ECS is a better choice than ABIT. ECS are slow, but
very reliable.

I recently bought an MSI KT4AV, and it's a sweet board. Fast, does
what I want. And cost me $70 out the door.
My SOYO KT-333 is currently out of commission, unfortunately.

Update:
Well, I got my new ASUS A7N8X Dlx up and running over the holidays! I
had some initial problems which turned out to be a bad memory stick.
Once I replaced the memory, everything went smoothly. The board has
been up and running for about 3 weeks now and I have yet to experience
even one lock-up or a blue screen. My SOYO was always having lock-ups.
Like I said, "Adios Soyo". Now I can look forward to spending my time
doing more constructive things instead of constantly babysitting a
sick motherboard!

Ah! That's great news. I knew that you'll love that A7N8X Dlx board.
Aren't you glad you don't have to clear the CMOS all the time and no
more lock-ups and blue screen of death )).
I had the same issues with my KT333 SOYO Ultra Platinum board. When I
received the ASUS KT600 board, I transferred all of the hardware and
software from the SOYO KT333 board over to the ASUS board; I didn't
experience any problems in that process. In fact, the software and
hardware installation went so smooth, I couldn't believe it.
At least you'll enjoy your time doing constructive things ahead of you
 .
So, what do you plan on doing with your SOYO board now ))? Just out
of curiousity, how many weeks of troubleshooting did you spend with
your SOYO board before deciding to buy your ASUS A7N8X Dlx board?

Woobie,
True statement about the warranty. Unfortunately, counting the weeks
of troubleshooting efforts, I've exceeded the one year warranty. I did
not want to give up so fast in troubleshooting. That's okay because
when I bought the ASUS KT600 board, it had a good price and I was
willing to go that route just to find out the difference between the
two boards. Besides, I wanted to find out if I will experience the
same problems on the ASUS KT600 board. I have an opposite experience
compare to you. Surprisingly, after I transferred all the software and
hardware over from the SOYO KT333 to ASUS KT600 board, I didn't
experience any problems. So far, no clearing of CMOS, no lockups yet.
I have not even open my computer case since I replace the SOYO board
to the ASUS board.
Anyway, that's good that you have less problem with Shuttle and Abit.
And it's good that SOYO is still the most stable board for you. I'll
have to wait until Soyo redesign their boards before I buy another
SOYO board. Now that I have the ASUS board, I kept asking myself why
do SOYO users have to clear the CMOS all the time or flash the bios,
etc... I lost track of how many times I had to do all that during my
troubleshooting efforts with the SOYO board.
I must admit though, I do like the looks of my KT333 Soyo board ;-. It
is sharp! But I would rather have a stable board that doesn't lock up
and I don't have to clear the CMOS or flash the bios on a regular
basis.

Denny ! So what other things do you like about the MSI KT4AV
compare to your SOYO KT-333 board?
What is the caused of your SOYO KT-333 board being out of commission?
Is it something intentional? Perhaps, you were doing some additional
troubleshooting? Or did the board started to become unstable? How many
months did you own that SOYO board so far? Just curious.

Life is now good! I have my board right where I want it and it is
rock-solid stable. I substituted a Barton +2500 for my T'bred +2400
and was able to OC to 2200Mhz by just changing the Freq. on the ASUS.
Prior to that my Freq was 166 with a Mult. of 11 which gave me the
normal result of 1826Mhz. My memory was running in SYNCH with the CPU
at 166. After making just the one change in Freq., The ASUS now
reports a +3200 CPU and memory running at 200. This was with NO
lockups and NO CMOS resets.
I fought with my SOYO board for 9 months before finally giving up and
going with an ASUS. I only wish I had done it much sooner and saved
myself so much aggravation.
