Hi,

I need some advice on RAM for my new motherboard. It has become painfully
obvious that my Kingston PC2100 value RAM from my previous computer just
isn't going to cut it on in this board. The CPU is an AMD XP2600+ T'Bred 333
FSB. With the current RAM installed the cpu shows up as a 1250 MHz processor
whether the clock switch is set to the "on" or "off" position. This is the
second GA-7N400 Pro to behave this way. I've tested the processor in another
system, so I know the cpu is good. So, if anybody else is running this board
with the 2600+ T'Bred, please let me know what brand and type of RAM you are
using.

Thanks,
UltraMega

I would highly recommend using PC2700 RAM for that board and
processor, the board supports PC3200 but you probably won't see an
increase in performance with it. To get your processor to show as a
2600+ performance rating, set the Front Side Bus (shows as "FSB
Frequency" in the BIOS) to 166MHz.

I've recently built several customer systems around this mobo and
several different CPUs including XP3000+ and found both Samsung and
Infineon PC2700 perfectly suited.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Hi RollingHippy,

With the FSB Frequency in BIOS set to 166MHz it still shows the cpu as a
1250 MHz processor. This is the second board to exhibit this behavior. I
wrote Gigabyte tech support but all they said was "set the clock switch to
'On,' in BIOS load 'Failsafe Defaults,' in BIOS load 'Optimized Defaults.'"
Well that didn't work either. Since I have no other devices besides a
graphics card, monitor, and keyboard attached, I have to suspect the memory.
I welcome any other suggestions, even other motherboard recommendations.

Thanks,
UltraMega

This question has come up a couple of times in this newsgroup. I built the
same mobo and cpu and had the same issue. Someone replied to change the
memory from slots 1and 3 to 1 and 2. If you are using 2 chips? This
solved my problem of the cpu showing up as a 1250 but now you dont utilize
dual channel memory. Someone else also replied to wait for a BIOS update to
correct that problem of the dual channel memory. I am using Samsung 2 -
512s.

I am using this m\b and I have the AMD 3000. I too had the problem
you speak of, the cpu was showing 1.29mgz. I am using Corsair pc2700 xms
memory. I set the clock switch to on and then checked and made sure that
my bios was set to fsb 166. I then, in bios, set the cpu ratio to 13.5.
I now have the cpu showing 2.25 mgz. I hope this helps.

Maybe someone does not want to state the obvious, generally speaking PC2100
ram will not function at 333. It runs at 266 max. Good luck

Fred,

Cool, a straight forward answer. I had already ordered 512Mb of PC2700 that
should arrive Friday.

Thanks

I've seen a lot of gripes from folks trying to use 333 cpus with 266 memory
(i.e. pc2100) so you're probably just going to have to give up and buy some
pc2700. Assuming gigabyte always tunes to the same specs, and I have no
clue if they do, try some Mushkin. They had a good sale recently the 512
pc2700 value chips were down to 59.00 a piece and then they had free
shipping promo too so I really got a bargain.
