Post subject: Aperture problem with S30?
Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>dcameras (more info?)

I'm just starting to get into exploring the settings on my Canon S30 camera,
but am noticing that changing the aperture setting doesn't seem to have as
much of an effect as images I see in magazines and on the net would suggest
it would. The difference between the maximum f8 and the minimum f2.8 seems
to be much less than I would expect from what I have seen and read. Is there
anything I could be doing wrong or any quirk of the camera to know about?

Thanks
Dee

Because of the small sensor size in digital cameras, aperture has a much
smaller effect on the depth of field, so there is not much change from the
widest to smallest aperture. Only the amount of light entering the camera,
aperture still effects the exposure.

Here is a calculator for the depth of field for various Lenses. Pick your
camera for drop down.

A tutorial for Olympus cameras on depth of field the same effects would
apply to a Canon also.

Depth of field defined.
