I just installed a C-Media PCI sound card, CMI-8738/C3DX, on my
motherboard and get no sound.
The ASUS installation disk installs the drivers for the sound card and
Device Manager indicates that the Device is working properly. But,
when I try to play music on Windows Media player 11, there is no sound
for a while, then I just get a buzzing noise.
I used the MaxSound, onboard sound for a while, but the volume is too
low.
Anyone have suggestions on how I can make this sound card work, or
should I buy another card.
Thanks in advance for suggestions.

I have a CMI8738 based PCI sound card. I also have SoundMax. I'm running
Win2K.
My experience was, I was not able to run both the SoundMax driver and the
CMI8738 at the same time. While there is an option in Windows to select
the sound output device, that wasn't working for me. The OS just seemed to
be very confused, and when I'd open the control panel again, the setting
was changed.
The solution was to uninstall Soundmax software, so the system only had
one choice.
That is my experience with it.

Did you disable the sound in BIOS setup?
Audio Controller [Enabled]
Enables or disables the audio selection Configuration options:
[Disabled] [Enabled]

Yes.
I disabled the Audio Controller in Bios.
Don't see Audio Selection Configuration. Is that in Bios, or
somewhere else. >> Stay informed about: Asus A8V-VM Sound Drivers |

Are you using active or passive speakers ?
To save a few bucks modern sound cards (including onboard) no longer have an
amplifier chip.
this means the output is not strong enough for passive speakers, you must
use active (powered ones)
