Post subject: Need Asus MB with PCI-E - suggestions?
Archived from groups: alt>comp>hardware>pc-homebuilt (more info?)

I have an Asus P4C800-E motherboard... 478 intel cpu. AGP.

My friend has a GF8800 PCI-E video card he said I can have...
I just need a new motherboard.

I can't afford to upgrade anything else... So I'm looking
for a board that will support my CPU, memory, etc.
and give me a PCI-E slot for video.

Any suggestions on a new board??

On the flip side - I have a GF5700LE AGP video card.... which
isn't really doing it anymore. I don't play a lot of games..
mainly CS. Sometimes a few others, but I don't have the time
like I used to.

Anyhoo - would it be cheaper to get a new/used AGP video card
to replace my 5700, rather then find a motherboard with a PCI-E
that will let me keep everything from my old board??

If so, what card would be good, performance wise, but not be
much $$?

My plan is to get a new rig next summer.... just trying to
limp along until then. Smile

Thanks!!

STEve

Your CPU and RAM are now outdated and not found on any current motherboards
that support PCI-E.

Since you are planning on a new build next summer, why not get a MB that
will support the processor you want and just stick an E4500 C2D or so
($120-$130) in it for now. It will outperform your S478 at pretty much stock
speed and will overclock for even better results. You just have to make sure
the MB will support the higher FSB processors now starting to show up and
should still be fairly state of the art even next summer.

I have a P4C800E-Dulex also, there is hope I'm running an ATI Sapphire
1950 Pro AGP. There is also 7800 Nforce's out there. As for the 478
running PCI-E there are several. Asus makes several: P4GD1, P4GPL-X
and P4RD1-MX. Asus also has a 478 which is AGP and PCI-e so that you
can run eather, it's the P4V800D-X. Asrock has several 478 PCI-e's
also such as the P4Dual-915GL, P4Dual 880pro and the P4Twims HDTV.
Biostar has the P4VM900-M4. Albatron has the PX915G4C and the
PX915P4C. ESQ has the A46G8-MLF. So there are options out there, so
why park your 57 Chevy when all it needs is a new set of tires.
