Post subject: Asus P4P800-dlx and kingston hyperx 3500 512MB
Archived from groups: alt>comp>hardware>overclocking (more info?)

Greetings everybody,

I have Asus P4P800-Dlx MB and one Kingston HX 3500 512MB memory stick on a
P4 2.4C system. I have had this setup for a while and I have not really
tried overclocking this system until now.

The most I can get out of this (stock fan) is overclock to 10% with "Turbo"
mode enabled. It brings to 2.6G CPU. That is great.

However, when I checked the memory using CPU-Z program, I see that my memory
CAS latency is only 2.5.

Here is the full CPU-Z's report on the memory:
Timings:
Frequency : 2x220.0 MHz
FSB:DRAM : 1:1
CAS# Latency : 2.5 clocks
RAS# to CAS# delay: 4 clocks
RAS# Prechage : 4 clocks
Cyccle Time (Tras): 8 clocks

Channels# : Single
Permonance Mode : disabled!!

My understanding was that Kingstong HX memory ran at 2-3-3-7 but I'm getting
2.5-4-4-8!!! That's terrible. I haven't really tested my memory speed in
standard mode (not OC'ed). I otta do that too just to make sure.

My CPU is running at 220MHz FSB with 879.9MHz Bus speed. I think this
number looks good too. The voltage reading CPU-Z shows that I'm running my
CPU at 1.5xx v.

I'm just not happy with the memory numbers.

I was thinking of adding one more 256MB KHX PC3500 memory and now I'm
considering another brand.

How can I get my memory numbers to run at 2-3-3-7 and how do I enable the
perfomance mode in Kingston HX 512MB PC3500 memory?

Your help on this is very much appreciated.

Thank you for taking your time to read my post.

Regards,
Naresh

All of the above seems normal. When you oc the fsb to 220 MHz and the DDR is
set at 1:1, it means you DDR is already overclocked too PC3500 has a rated
speed of 218 MHz!). So there is a great chance that pushing the FSB higher
will result in no-boot, whatever your cas settings. If you want to overclock
further, set your DDR at 5:4, and you should be able to reach a fsb of 270
MHz, although if the rest of the system could support such a high frequency.
You will probably get more stable oc results if you set the turbo mode to
normal.
Let your cas settings as they are (it doesn' t make a huge difference), set
your RAM at 5:4 and push gradually the FSB to 240 - 250 MHz. This will give
you a serious speed increase, and your system will remain stable.
Don' t forget to lock the AGP/PCI to 66/33 in your bios and to check
regularly your CPU temps.
If you add one module, you HAVE to install the same as you actually have, in
order to benefit from dual DDR, which will double the memory bandwith. So
don't worry about cas...<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Thank you so much E1jerid. It makes a lot of sense now.

I'm running my mem in 5:4 and I have the CPU running at 240FSB giving me
2.88GHz. That's really good. I guess I will have to wait a little to get
the KHX3500 512MB RAM.

Thanks so much.

Naresh

Sorry to jump into this thread with a question of my own, but here
goes:)

How do you set the memory to 1:1 or 5:4 etc on P4P800_d board?
I for the life of me cannot find a setting in the bios for it.

I am running my p4 2.8, 800 at 265 mhz which overclocks to 3.7g's or
so, and my memory says its in dual channel mode 5\4 at 212mhz or so.
So everything is fine, but the board seems to set it's own divider for
the ram. Is there really a setting for it in the bios (I do have the
1015 bios)
Btw, the above was achieved with 2x512mb kingmax 3500 ram and a ZALMAN
CNPS7000A-CU cooler. All memory acceloration and turbo modes enabled
and default voltages.

Hello Rick,

All I did was change the DDR frequency to 333 from 400MHz in the BIOS
setting.

I had the same question like you did, I could not find a setting where I
could change the FSB:DRAM setting. But I kindda figure it out.

5/4=1.25

I set the FSB at 240 and DDR frequency at 333 (but it is running at 192*2
somehow)

So 240/192=1.25 which equals to 5/4 or 5:4

I may be way off track there, but it does make sense for me. Smile

And I did lock the AGP/PCI to 66/33 in the bios as per Eljerid's suggestion
and everything else in Auto.

Thanks

Naresh
