Newb question about Asus P5K Premium (black pearl edition) -

For SATA HDDs, do I have to create a RAID setup, as this mobo uses the
ICH9R chipset for SATA ports? The reason I ask is that I only have 1
HDD, and ATM I can't get the BIOS to even see that it exists.

Thanks, regards, Robert.

Ordinary operation of the port is possible. The BIOS should
offer RAID mode, but also offer other modes (IDE, RAID, AHCI).
Check the BIOS to see what options are available. "Enhanced"
and "Configure SATA as IDE" should work without a RAID driver.

If you are having communication problems with the drive, you
can also install a jumper on the hard drive, that forces it
to use 1.5Gbit/sec mode. Hard drives that support 3Gb/sec
cable communication, also are backward compatible with
1.5Gb/sec operation. The drive should be able to try both
rates (autonegotiate). On certain VIA chipsets, this doesn't
work, and then the user is required to install a jumper on
the hard drive, which forces the hard drive to stay at
1.5Gb/sec. While that should not be necessary for your Intel
chipset, you could try the jumper anyway. The necessary jumper
information may not be present on the drive label, in which case
you'll have to consult the drive manufacturer web site, for info.

If the BIOS still cannot see the drive, either the motherboard
is defective, or the drive is defective. Make sure the drive
has power, and you can hear spinup when power is applied. Try
a few different SATA cables and motherboard SATA ports, to see
if there is a response. If the drive won't spin, it also might
not choose to respond on the cable.

Paul

Many thanks Paul. Right now, I cannot physically remove the drive to
inspect the cabling etc. It's inside a "Smart Drive 2000c" HDD silent
enclosure which has become stuck inside the 5.25 drive bay! This is
very unfortunate because it could well be a loose or defective cable.
My SATA optical drive is recognised by the BIOS fine, and I've tried
it in various SATA ports. BTW, the mobo's SATA ports are 3gb/sec and
so is the HDD. Because the hard drive silent enclosure is quiet, I am
unable to audibly detect spinup! (Although it may not be spinning at
all - I can't really tell.)

Best regards, Robert.

Solved. Loose cable. Took PC to computer shop, they released the
front panel of case (didn't realise you could do that), removed HDD
from HDD enclosure, reattached loose cables, and voila, BIOS can now
see HDD.

Thanks, and to all replies about this from this thread + others, best
regards from Robert.

We're very glad your problem was resolved. Just for future reference,
though, you might want to think about putting all the pertinent
information in the first post. In this scenario there was NOTHING
MORE pertinent than the fact the drive was physically stuck so that
the cabling couldn't be checked.
