Is an Athlon XP 2500+ better than a 2400+?

Post subject: Is an Athlon XP 2500+ better than a 2400+?

I ordered a system with an Athlon XP 2400+, which is (i think) a 2 Ghz
processor. I received a system with an Athlon 2500+, which sells for
$20 more but is (I think) a 1.833 Ghz processor. Should I be pleased
about having gotten a more expensive processor, or upset about having
gotten a slower processor? Are there some links that explain the
difference?

The normal XP 2500+ (or 2400+) comes with 256K of level 2 cache
The newer "Barton core" XP comes with 512K of level 2 cache.
The Barton core will give the same performance, but at a lower clock speed
It sounds like you got a processor with the Barton core,
Which are great overclockers.
You should be very pleased.

Thanks for the reassurance.

Poking around, I find the BIOS has a setting for CPU Critical
Temperature, which the builder left at the default :"disabled." It
has settings every 5 degrees C from 70 to 95. What should I use?

Safest, lowest.
Never get a warning at that and with the regular boxed fan.
