Audio problems on Intel DG965HW with Windows 2000

I'm trying to use regular 2-channel self-powered desktop speakers with
my new Intel DG965HW motherboard on Windows 2000, and the sound is
horrible. I get "normal" sound intermittently, but most of the time
it's just garbled.

Intel tech support told me to uninstall the sound driver, reset the
BIOS settings, and reinstall the sound driver. It didn't make any
difference.

Has anyone been able to get good sound out of this board with regular
stereo speakers and Windows 2000? I suspect that the sound is actually
being run by software and that Windows is not giving it high enough
priority over the other software running. Since I routinely listen to
music via WinAmp all day while I'm working, this is a rather annoying
problem for me.

I found a solution to my problem - I disabled the integrated sound and
put in a PCI sound card.
