Archived from groups: alt>comp>hardware>overclocking, others (more info?)

I just purchased a new BFG 6600GT-OC video card to replace my dead ATI
9600pro. So far I like it fine except for one quirk, My system is a P4 2.4B
ghz running on a Gigabyte 8PE667 ultra M/B. This system is o/ced to 3.0 ghz
at an FSB of 167 for a couple years rock stable, The PSU is an Enernax 465
watt and voltages are good.
After installing the new BFG card the system detected the card and
immediately rebooted and set the FSB back to 133. No way will it let me OC
the system now.
Tried many times and same results, Phoned BFG Tech support and they think
that it is because the 6600GT-OC is overclocked from the factory at core 525
and memory 1050 that it will not allow OCing the FSB due to AGP buss speed
increase if not locked at 66mhz.
This sounds reasonable and makes good sense, My AGP iis locked down at 66
and PCI at 33.
Has anyone run into this yet? Is there a workaround or possible solution?
BTW I also purchased a new Viewsonic VP930B monitor, Great, fantastic color
and great viewing angle.

Thanks and Regards, Rene Lamontagne

Now,that's a strange one. Even though you set the FSB manually, when you re
boot it's back to default FSB?
Hmm,have to think about that one.
Do you have the latst BIOS?

What the BFG tech support told you makes no sense at all. The idea that the
BIOS of the BFG would or could detect the motherboard FSB speed setting, and
then could or would CHANGE that setting makes no sense at all. I guess all
you have learned is that you can get ridiculous information from BFG
technical support. Why don't you call BFG tech support and hope you get
someone who is either more knowledgeable or is at least willing to look for
a real answer.

Though I can only guess at an answer, consider these.

Your new display adapter may use a lot more power than your ATI 9600pro.

Also, when you say 'system detected the card and immediately rebooted and
set the FSB back to 133' do you mean that as soon as you plugged the card in
and started the system, the system rebooted as soon as the BIOS detected the
presence of a display adapter, or do you mean that you installed the card,
booted the system successfully, installed the drivers, then rebooted, and
THEN the system rebooted and reset the FSB to nominal?

I suggest you install the card in another overclocked system and check its
operation.

No matter what, I'd get an RMA number and return the card. They shouldn'g
be able to kick about you overclocking your system - after all, they are
overclocking THEIR card beyond the chip manufacturer's specifications. The
support tech's explanation makes no sense at all, and there are plenty of
equivelent cards that don't show this behavior.

I don't know what your solution could be. I have the same card in an
OC system and have none of that trouble. Quite frankly, I don't see
how it could do that at all, except, it's bios is posted first. That
still doesn't make sense though.

Obvious question: Did you remember to plug in the separate power
connector? I forgot to do that once and had all kinds of quirky
behavior.

Is there a double boot option in your bios and it's reverting to
another saved configuration?

First off, Yes when I installed the card and booted the system it detected
the card and Immediatly did a reboot and reset the FSB to default , this
happened just as it was detecting and displaying the drives. And no there
were no drivers installed at that time
It now does this whenever I reset the fsb to a higher than 133 value.
So Yes this card probably draws quite a bit more power than the ATI 9600 as
it has the power supply 4 pin molex connector (which is hooked up) I even
tried different cables from the PSU with the thought that some might be less
heavily loaded.
I guess my first step tomorrow morning will be to disconnect 2 hard drives
and 2 optical drives and then plug it in to a dedicated cable and see if
that changes things. That way I can more or less test if is power related,
The enermax 465 is a good brand but who knows, mine could be going bad
allthough voltages look good in bios and on MBM5, +5V is 4.98 and +12v is
11.95, will update results tommorow night
BTW the chap at BFG seemed to be guessing at what he was saying althought it
did make some sense as he said it Smile

Yep, plugged in and reading +4.98 volts on the +5 and +12.03 on the +12v as
measured with a 3 and one half digit expensive DVM (are you listening Tom)
and a few minutes ago I disconnected 4 drives and 2 fans to give it a
dedicated line and it still did the same thing. I think this fairly well
clears the PSU so will keep looking for something else. BTW no dual boot
just running XP2 with SP2.
