Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>mainboard>msi-microstar (more info?)

I have a MSI 6373 which I have had no problems with until installing a pci
usb 2 card. After installing this it would post then stop dead at the
windows logo screen ( win xp) . I uninstalled the pci card then it booted
fine into windows. I figured I prob needed to flash the bios and update a
few drivers for the MOBO to get the usb 2 card to work.

The install for the drivers went fine. However when I went to flash the
bios, I noticed it looked and was installing to my D: drive..Hmmmmmmmmm....
My first HD is partitioned into two drives ( C & D)

..I have nothing! Dark screen.

I tried going to the help files on the MSI site and here is what it said to
do:

BIOS flash failed during BIOS update

Try BIOS recovery for AMI or Award BIOS

Rename the desired AMI BIOS file to AMIBOOT.ROM and save it on a floppy
disk. e.g. Rename A6712VMS.190 to AMIBOOT.ROM

**********NOTE: There is no such file or anything remotely close on the
floppy (Rename A6712VMS.190 to AMIBOOT.ROM )

Since this is not available I am stuck.

I need help in getting back my original bios.

Thanks

Cindy

? This is something I don't understand.

Just some questions hoping they will help you to solve your problem:
Did you download the correct BIOS for your mainboard from MSI website? I
didn't find 6373, but there might be another Product name for your board.
Just refer to the manual.
Did you make sure, that this is AMI BIOS? If it's Award BIOS, then there is
another procedure.
If AMI BIOS (I didn't verify):
Unzip the downloaded archive.
There you should find a file named A6373VMS.XXX or similar.
Create a copy of that file and rename that copy to AMIBOOT.ROM
Copy AMIBOOT.ROM to an empty floppy.
Insert that floppy into the drive of your "damaged" computer and try to
boot.

Good luck.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Thank you Michael!

The actual type of this mobo is K7N420 Pro . Seems there is a discrepancy
with the MSI website.
If you look here
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/download/dld/spt_dld_detail.php?UID=10&kind=1" target="_blank">http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/download/dld/spt_dld_detail.php?...=10&kin</a>
it states that this board has an award bios, however if you look here:
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.msicomputer.com/product/detail_spec/k7n420pro.htm" target="_blank">http://www.msicomputer.com/product/detail_spec/k7n420pro.htm</a> it states that
it has an AMI.

I am inclined to believe it is an award because I think I recall seeing
something about the word 'award' during the post.

Since I cant get into this computer at the moment, it is a toss up.

Award BIOS recovery procedure
. Make a bootable floppy disk
. Copy the Award flash utility files & bios file to the bootable
floppy diskette
. Open Notepad and put the following command line e.g. awdfl826B
w6777NMS.140 than save to the floppy drive and name as Autoexec.bat
. Restart system with the floppy diskette that contains the Award
utility & bios file (it will take less than 2 minutes before screen comes
out)

I am going to try the above and see if this works.. Wisk me luck!

Thank you so much. Seems I have another problem. The computer will not
access the floppy drive and only uses the CD drive. Is there a way around
this?

after prepairing files, copy them/burn onto a CDR?

Cindy, what was your outcome? Did you get it to work?

I'm sitting here looking at my "K8T Neo-FIS2R". I'm lost. I can't get
the bios recovery feature to work. After the bad flash, my system
won't post at all. It powers on and seems to be in a constant reset
state. My two cd rom drives led lights keep flashing as the system
resets continually. The system won't even try to access the floppy
drive, which has the bios recovery disk in it. I also have an AMI
bios recovery setup CD & an Award bios recovery CD that I have
tried in each cd rom drive at startup. Neither disc works as the
system resets just about every 3 seconds and doesn't have time to
read the disc (if it will read them at all). I am at a lost of
options. Does anyone have other recovery steps that I could take? I
went out to purchase the exact same board yesterday, but it was out
of stock, so I had to settle for the "K8T Neo-FSR". I don't want this
board, so I have 10 days to decide what I'm going to do before my cash
return option is up. The bios seems to be soldered onto the board, so
there won't be any hot swapping the bios between boards to reflash
that way.

If I can't recover my bios with MSI's help options, and I will end up
having to buy another board anyway, I'm not too sure that I will
support this company anymore.

Thanks for the reply..Smile
In a rare moment of blonde brilliance, I remembered I had the exact same
board that had died of another cause. I pulled the bios chip from the dead
board and it booted right up.

Remind me never to flash again

I had the same problem. I could not access the floppy drive, and the CD
acted totaly strange.

On my board, the bios holder was soldered but not the chip itself. Took a
little gentle prying and it came right up.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I think mine is the same way. I'm going to try it and see what I get.
