I am trying to get into the bios on an elite mb for a friend who has
forgotten his password. Can it be done by shorting the appropriate jumper or
some other way, or is he stuck until he remembers it??

Just pull the power cord and reset the CMOS with the appropriate jumper, or
you can pull the board and take out the battery for 15 mins or so.
