Today on bootup, after the drives are recognized this message comes
up:

Primary master hard drive S.M.A.R.T status BAD.

Warning: Immediately backup your data and replace
your hard drive. A failure may be imminent.

Then I run the manufacturer's drive test and it says:

Congratulations, your drive passed the test, and it is in good
condition.

So, which do I believe, the warning or the test? And, if I decide to
believe the test and keep using the drive, how do I get rid of the
message that halts bootup?

The warning.

Disable it in the bios.

Post the Everest SMART report, for a better idea about what is happening with the drive.

It looks to me like your drive may have had a stiction problem:

Thats good, its often that value thats whats producing a bad SMART warning.

Modern drives cannot have stiction problems, due to different
surfache coating. This is something different, e.g. a shot motor
driver or a defectiove PSU that is unstable on the 12V line.

Do not continue using this system until you have found
the problem and make a complete backup NOW! The vendor diagnostics
is simply lying to you, this is a very serius issue, as it could
well cause catatstropic death, i.e. a completely inaccessible drive
without further warning.

Thanks to everyone for the help.

I got an SATA drive and trying to figure out how to install it.

It's the drive test software that Maxtor (now Seagate) supplies for
testing their drives. There are two tests quick and more intensive.
I ran the more intensive.

Some drive makers enable warning thresholds for things that don't really
constitute anything to worry about. For instance I have some Fujitsu
drives that give warnings about the "power on count". Basically Fujitsu
didn't expect the drive to last so long. Since there are no real problems
with those drives, I ignore that particular SMART value.

If the manufacturer specific utility doesn't find a problem, I would just
suggest disabling the SMART warning in the BIOS setup.

Thanks for the correction.

I found the following interesting document:
http://datacent.com/maxtor_data_recovery.php?hdd=Maxtor&model=5T030H3

"Another issue with Maxtor hard drives is damage to the components on
the cirquit board (PCB). Maxtor drives are very vulnerable to
overheating, power surges and bad power supply unit combined with
power streak is usually enough to burn spindle driver (usually SMOOTH
L2750 chip) on the PCB."

FWIW, a few people at this forum are also having spin-up issues with
Maxtor drives:
http://my.ocworkbench.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=50318

Here are some examples of catastrophic failure:

Burnt Chip on Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 causes drive failure:

Smooth L7250 chip family:

Of course it is, babblehead.

Oh yes, babblehead, please do.

You know it will because of your utter lazyness to clean it up.

You should be.
It's a real honour to be corrected by the clueless babblehead.

Strange how the manufacturer diagnostics plainly missed that and gave the drive a clean bill of health.

Pity his drive is just working fine.
