Post subject: Which BRAND of Bios is correct?
Archived from groups: comp>sys>ibm>pc>hardware>chips (more info?)

Scratching my head here.... I am trying to flash the Bios on my son's
pc due to inability to connect a brand new D-Link USB network adapter.
The D-link is DWL-G120 and the driver install will not finish and the
power light won't come on. I suspect a Bios upgrade is in order.

This is a desktop PC running XP Pro with service pack 1 installed and
a mountain of updates.

Here is my confusion: and I sure could use some help.

The BIOS is AMI and the mainboard is ECS. When I go to the ECS site,
and put the MB number in - it wants me to download an AWARD bios for
this mainboard.

Here is the information I get from running a diagnostic app called
PC2004

Mainboard P4vxasd2+
Version 1.0
Manufacturer ECS
Option 1 = System Mgmt Bios from Atlanta
Option 2 = SMBIOS from AMI

Here is the current Bios information

American Megatrends
Version 07.00T
date 2-4-2-01
ID = 62-1125-001131-0010111-040201-VIA_P6
DMI = 2.3

Thank you for any and all help
Donna

I'm a bit confused about models and board versions, but here's one:

<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.ecsusa.com/downloads/p4vxasd2.html" target="_blank">http://www.ecsusa.com/downloads/p4vxasd2.html</a>

and another:

<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.ecsusa.com/downloads/p4vxasd2_5x.html" target="_blank">http://www.ecsusa.com/downloads/p4vxasd2_5x.html</a>

I hope that the AMI flash utility won't let you flash the wrong one.

Good luck.

Thank you for your reply Bob.

I've flashed any number of Bios in my day but I was never so confused
about downloading the correct one before this.

I have been to the sites you refered me to.

Here is what was throwing me off.

The board is indeed ECS P4VXASD2+

I see no reference to the " _5X" shown at the end of your link.

I believe this is the page I need to use for my son's PC.

<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.ecs.com.tw/download/dw_spec.asp?product_id=51" target="_blank">http://www.ecs.com.tw/download/dw_spec.asp?product_id=51</a>

It is the correct mainboard but do you have a clue what the PCB 5.0
means?

I believe this page is the Bios I want and I believe it will be the
030310 version.

I would appreciate your thoughts. Right now I'm glad I have an Asus MB
in my PC. <g>
