Help!

I had a computer, it was good. Then I got a laptop. So I wanted to
get rid of the computer. I wiped the hard drive. Removed all the
parts except mother board, then stored it away. Now I've decided I
would like to use it again.

I put it all back together. switched it on and ... nothing. I get the
dvd drive spin, the hard drive beeps and begins to boot, but stops, dvd
drive stops (which is main boot drive), and the monitor just has a grey
glow.

Plugged monitor into laptop, monitor is ok. Tried a new vid card,
still no joy.

Everything seems plugged in ok, no loose connections.

It seems to go through the motions of booting, but just stops, no
display at all on the monitor just the setup lights flashing in
sequence, like when you unplug it from your video card.

Any ideas? anybody had the same problem?

Motherboard in original case? different PSU?
Leave plugged in with psu switch on after everything is hooked up.
If psu is smaller than original, it is going to be possibly a long wait.
I've had same problem after taking apart.
possibly motherboard battery,
I also had unique problem where it would not get a monitor/full post
without main hard drive set as active/partitioned(used maxtor and western
digital).
Wiggle the ram.
Wait it out if your sure its all clean and stuff plugged in good.

Good luck.

Where did you store everything? Could it be that some moisture may have
gotten to the components, or possibly even bugs? bgd's comment about the
CMOS battery is a possibility as well, since some boards won't POST with a
dead battery. Also make sure everything is properly seated. Another
possibility could be that you may have accidently shorted something with
static.

What were you expecting exactly when you wiped the hard drive and took it
apart? Is it now supposed to boot to an OS or is that wiped also? The DVD
Drive is now the main boot drive and you have the OS on CD? I would suggest
that you take it apart again and start over again like you are building a
new one. Be prepared to be replacing things.

thanks for all the info, all the parts where stored in a drawer, in my
office. The case which just had the motherboard and floppy and power
supply in was in the attic. I am leaning towards the idea of the
motherboard battery. Yes I wiped the OS, I have a boot CD with it on.
Not tried it with no memory in but did try every other configuration of
removing things.

Thanks for the help.

If you wiped the hard drive it won't have an OS to boot into.

The hard disk is spinning, so the PSU must be OK.

IF it sounds like it is booting (hard disk rattling a bit), but you have no
picture, then I would suspect the graphics card, cable or monitor. You have
proven the screen is OK, so I suspect the graphics card has come to some
hard during the move. Perhaps a knock, or damp perhaps.

IF the hard disk just spins up and makes no further noises, then it could be
the processor, RAM or motherboard that has gone.

Do you have a speaker connected to the front panel connectors on the
motherboard? What series of beeps do you get when you power up? Do the fans
spin on the CPU and other places?

The computer would still boot with a flat battery - it just wouldn't
remember any settings. At worst, you would be able to power on and get into
the BIOS. If you have no picture on the screen at all, then it is more
serious than the battery!

If you can't even get into the BIOS, then you are not going to be able to
change boot devices and confirm settings - this is a hardware problem. See
my other (2nd level) post.

replace *hard* with *harm* (oops!)

Untrue, many boards will not boot with a dead battery. Some
will, but certainly not all. Checking battery is always a
good idea when a board won't post.

Completely untrue. There are boards which simple do not
post at all, absolutely require a battery swap before
anything more. Clearing CMOS doesn't help nor does anything
else, they have to have the battery.
