Can anyone direct me to a few good sites on setting up studio lighting
or light setup techniques? I'm wanting some basic info to set up
portrait photos and such. I want to learn about lighting. I see lots of
books for sle that I might pick up after I gather some basic
understandings.

You'll get some good answers if you post to rec.photo.technique.people. If
someone named zeitgeist responds, you're in luck.

There's also a yahoo group: <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://groups.yahoo.com/group/z-ProPhoto/" target="_blank">http://groups.yahoo.com/group/z-ProPhoto/</a> .

Here's a link to a wonderful, free little book by Dean Collins on how to
build your own lighting rigs
for almost nothing:

Dennis,

try this site. <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.webphotoschool.com/newschool/Default.asp" target="_blank">http://www.webphotoschool.com/newschool/Default.asp</a> Very
basic and simple to understand.
