Hi, I have a Shuttle AK21A V2.1 with an AMD Duron 1300, 256Mb PC 2100, AGP
4X Card, Award BIOS.
After it was lent to a friend it now will not boot and I see nothing on the
screen!
I used the jumper to clear the CMOS to 'factory' setting but it doesn't
help.
When I switch the mains power on the fan goes for a second which is
worrying.
When I switch the PC on, I get three quick high beeps, then another one at a
lower tone and then another at a lower tome again. Hitting the reset switch
just repeats this sequence.
Help and suggestions please! >> Stay informed about: Beeping AK32A - Help please! |

Found this on a web site: <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.arkytech.com/alliknow/hs450.htm" target="_blank">http://www.arkytech.com/alliknow/hs450.htm</a>
AWARD BIOS BEEP CODES
The following are Award BIOS Beep Codes that can occur. However because of
the wide variety of different computer manufacturers with this BIOS the beep
codes may vary.
Beep Code Description
1 long, 2 short Indicates a video error has occurred and the BIOS cannot
initialize the video screen to display any additional information
Any other beep(s) RAM problem.
If any other correctable hardware issues the BIOS will display a message

Also:
Award BIOS Beep Codes
Award BIOS uses beeps of varying duration. A long beep will typically last
for 2 seconds while a short beep will last only 1 second. Award BIOS also
uses beeps of different frequency to indicate critical errors. If an Award
BIOS detects that the CPU is overheating it may play a high pitched
repeating beep while the computer is running.
BEEP CODE MEANING POSSIBLE CAUSE
1 Long, 2 Short Video adapter failure Bad video adapter
Repeating (Endless loop) Memory error Bad memory or bad connection
1 Long, 3 Short Video adapter failure Bad video adapter or memory
High freq. beeps (while running) CPU is overheating CPU fan failure
Repeating High, Low beeps CPU failure Bad processor

Thanks for that, I tried taking out the AGP Card and replacing it - same
result.
I tried taking out the AGP and putting in a PCI Graphice card - same result.
I tried no graphics card at all - same result.
Is it reasonable to assume I have a bad motherboard?<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Beeping AK32A - Help please! |

Not really. It could be memory or the cpu. Or even the power supply.
Did you try with all the drive cables disconnected also just to see if you
could get to the bios? Other then that, if you have no way to test things,
your only alternative is to try replacing components one at a time. It
could end up being the board itself but it could be anything.
