Hi All!
Well, act in haste and repent at leisure goes the saying. I guess I
proved it this month. Bit of a cautionary tale.
For two years I had a Celeron 1.8 with 60 Gig hard drive and 256 RAM.
I got a quality sound card and a network card. It wasn't brilliant but
I was happy. Then we had a HUGE lighting storm over Cambridge and my
computer went very funny. Music quit playing, my internet connection
was up and down. Then the computer just quit starting up altogether. I
needed a new computer or to repair the one I had.
My family were about to go away and they were concerned that I would
not be able to communicate with them or be able to get the computer
fixed without their car. I guess none of us were thinknig too clearly
before the holiday. In haste I went with a friend to the local car
boot sale. Usually the guy has a good stock of old computers. This
time the fastest he had was a Duron 1.2. I bought it.
Since I bought my Duron I feel it is a little on the slow side and
can't cope as well as the 1.8 Celeron. Music breaks up if another
programme is activated. I don't recall that happening with the
Celeron.
I know little about the mechanics of computers or upgrading but I
found out my computer is a socket A. So in a moment of madness I went
on Ebay and found another, more powerful CPU which is socket A
compatible - an Athlon 2600. Unfortunately, having bought it, I have
also found out that it is apparently not compatible with my
motherboard. Apparently you need different motherboards for diffeent
CPUs. Also memory. I don't know what else.
Right at the moment I don't know what to do. I could really use some
constructive advice (ie. not just yeah you made a total prat of
things). I'm wondering if I should
attempt to repair my old Celeron (possible motherboard replacement,
seing as we replaced the sound files, sound card and network card and
it still collapsed again). Then flog my Duron computer.
live with my slow Duron 1.2 and put the Athlon chip back on Ebay and
hope to get my money back (I paid £35 for it).
go on Ebay again and buy the extra bits I ned to get a more powerful
computer (for under £75 cos I'm disabled - poor).
Is upgrading a really huge deal? Mum's partner is good at putting
sound cards in, etc for me. Is it much more complicated to put in a
new motherboard, memory chips? Ebay is awash with chips and
motherboards and whatever. Can someone offer any guidance as to what
to get and how much I should expect to pay? Is there a good/reasonably
priced make of motherboard? Are some memory chips better than others?
I gather I would need a motherboard that does at least everything my
Duron does:-
video to moniter
network card
my sound card I can bring over
256Meg RAM
2 hard drives (I brought my old one over because the Duron's hard
drive is titchy at 20 Gig)
2 CD drives (inc a burner)
4 USB slots
If I get a motherboard with more bits do I need to get a diffeent back
for my computer?
A thousand apologies for my total ignorance. This is all new to me. I
bought a box from a shop and if the damned NTL had shielded my network
card from the lighting I would have been happy surfing still. Alas all
is misery, confusion and expense!
Any advice anyone can give would be very much appreciated.
Cheers

here's a program for you download and install. it should be able to give us the brand and model of your motherboard. that way we can figure if a new board will fit okay.
http://www.lavalys.com/products/download.php?pid=1&lang=en
give us as much info on your present setup. power supply, type of ram, video card or onboard video, etc.
what operating system are you using and do you have a disk to do a fresh install of windows.
what 2600 did you get?
AXDA2600DKV3C 2.13Ghz Multiplier=16x(tbred)
AXDA2600DKV4D 333FSB 1.91Ghz Multiplier=11.5x(barton)

That's what I read at first, which is why I bought the nw chip. Then I
saw some sellers on Ebay were specifying things like the memory or the
motherboard the chip needs to run on. That's when I thought things
would start to rack up.

When I thought that the motherboard made a difference I found a

Forgot to mention that the chip I bought off Ebay was an AXDA2600DKV3D

Hope that helps.

I suspect it is the first one. MS8308E. I am unfortunatley unable to
open the case until my friend opens it for me. A case of shaky hands
I'm afraid., I have emailed the seller of the chip (which is yet to
arrive) to ask about stepping and whther the chip is locked. I believe
he did not have time to test it himself before selling it to me.

well i guess we have a little time.
when the new cpu xp2600 arrives check the numbers on it. you may need plenty of light and good glasses. there is a line of numbers on it that should look like:
AQXDA 0314 mpmw -- the middle set of numbers is what we are interested in to determine whether it is unlocked. amd started locking the chips arounc 0340.
http://www.neoseeker.com/Hardware/Products/Matsonic_MS8308E/
i looked your board up and it is using the old sdram 168 pin. you will need to buy some ddr 2700 or ddr 3200 184 pin. the price should be about the same 3200 might be even cheaper.
check around for any board with cpu fsb 333 or 400.
when your friend opens the case have him look at the side of the psu, so we know if it has enough power. give us the brand, model number and what the amps are for the 3.3, 5 & 12volt lines. also have him look at how much extra room the case has. your board is a micro atx. the case may be big enough for a micro atx or full atx which would give you more options.
do you have cd with windows?

Hi!
Excuse the long post. I don't know if you still need any of the above.
OK, so I'm looking at buying some new memory for a start. That's not
too expensive.
I have a Windows XP home disk although the computer came with XP Pro
on it.
The chip arrived today. You are right about the small print.

PS: I asked the seller about steps and such and he said he did not
know anything more about the chip than what is on the case. >> Stay informed about: Big Oops! Please help a newbie |

Oh dear. I got into the AMIBios CPU PnP. There were two items in the
list which were highlighted. However, I could not seem to change
either of them. I pressed return and up and down without effect.
List was
CPU Speed 1200

CPU frequency 100

as you said ebay is awash with all kinds of stuff. so you should take your time and figure out what will fit your needs and budget. it's probably a good idea to get some idea of the end product, so we can match up the right hardware as we go.
i would suggest 512mb 3200 memory. like i said earlier the price is the same. now the choice is 1x512 or 2x256. motherboards are either single or dual channel.
i found some measurements for micro cases and mini towers to compare to what you have. if you can take a measurement of your case we might be able to see if you need a micro atx or full atx motherboard. i'm assuming yours is a tower case.
363 x 180 x 370 mm / 352mm x 180mm x 373mm (HxWxD) micro tower
423 x 190 x 435 / 540 X W 225 X H463 mini tower
another decision to make is to go with onboard video or buy a cheap video card.
decisions, decisions, decisions, ah but that's half the fun.

i ran across this motherboard that i think would be perfect for you. micro atx, on board video, it has multiplier, voltage adjustments to take advantage of the unlocked xp2600. if at a later time you wanted to speed things up, you could buy a vid card and take advantage of the 200fsb. with the onboard video you need to stay with the 333fsb.
http://www.asrock.com/product/product_k7s41.htm#
http://www.ocworkbench.com/2004/asrock/k7s41/k7s41-g1.htm
i see they are listed on ebay and everything.
you could buy one stick of 3200 memory and add one later if you wish. you would set the fsb for the cpu and memory to the insync 333/333.
you may need to get a better heatsink and fan for the cpu to over clock but you could be up and running at stock speed.
there is a gx version that only has the 333fsb. in the long run it would be better to get the one i listed at the top of the page. prices seem to be near the same. below is a write up on the gx version and it mentions the one above.

welcome back! have you been hanging out down at the french riviera?
what do you think of the suggestion above?
your going to have to decide if your going to stay with onboard video or get a video card too but that will run more money.
your also going to have to decide if you want a board that can take advantage of the unlocked cpu or just run it as a xp2600, which would be fine too.
you do some thinking and get back to us.

I just found out that if you lean on the shift key for too long it
triggers some kind of accessiblity programme which turns on the shift
key unless you go into Control Panel and untick the disability
functions.
I'm disabled but triggering this accessiblity thing stopped me from
using my keyboard. You have to laugh!

Excuse my ignorance, but I presume this is overclocking the chip? >> Stay informed about: Big Oops! Please help a newbie |
