This Seems to be the place for sensible answers....

I recently built the following:
ASUS A7V8X-X
ATHLON XP3200+
512MB (PC3200)
MX4000 GFX card
Samsung 40gig H/D
Running from a 400w PSU

The temperature rarely rises above 45oC -CPU and 35oC M/Board.

I installed windows XP and it ran for an hour before crashing and coming up
with the following error message:
"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or coirrupt:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM"
then tells me I can repair this using the original XP cd-rom.
I`ve done this twice and ended up re-installing on both occassions, still no
use it runs for a while then crashes to same error message.
I have tried it with different Hard drive (IBM Deskstar) with XP already
installed and it ran fine for a few days non-stop.
I then attached the Samsung drive again as slave and tried to format it from
within XP.
System crashed, now IBM hard drive is showing the sam error.

It`s driving me insane, is it something blindingly obvious or is there a
hardware fault somewhere?

It would appear that the Samsung Drive is the problem. Do a Repair Install
on the IBM drive to restore it.
Boot from your XP CD and on the First Option to install, select NEW Install,
then it should detect the current install and allow you to Repair it from
there. That should fix everything with the IBM.
It should like the Samsung Drive has a problem and for whatever reason it
caused your IBM drive to crash.

There's not enough information here to draw a conclusion. What you need to
do is install the Samsung hard drive in a different computer system and USE
IT for about a week or more of heavy use. Do it ASAP, as you may have to
RMA the motherboard or the Samsung hard drive. Something is corrupting
files on your hard drive. The only two common components are the samsung
hard drive and the drive controller on the new ASUS motherboard. Well, the
power supply is common also, but I don't think that's the problem as you
haven't seen other symptoms that would point to a power supply problem. If
the Samsung hard drive works fine in another computer, RMA the motherboard.
Oh, before you do that, make sure the motherboard is running the latest
chipset drivers downloaded from ASUS. If that doesn't help, RMA that

Thanks for all the help, simplest things that we forget to check........
XP3200+ prefers running on a board with 400FSB, not the 333 that the M/Board
I was trying to run it on provides!
